My daughter recommended me this film, and it's wonderful.
The Friends (夏の庭, summer garden, in the original Japanese), is a 1994 film by Shinji Somai. It follows three boys who start to observe an old man because they're obsessed with death, but end up forming a friendship and help him restore his house and garden.
It's half summer holiday youth film, and half a meditation on lives devastated by war. And very beautifully shot.
