It’s not just the color or size difference or variation between them, although those are typically a little different as well. You usually don’t notice those once installed, because they are not side-by-side with the other to compare to.
No, this is something you can spot on its own even when installed, without knowing the size or thickness.

However, the faux Zellige tiles can’t quite replicate that hand-crafted vibe (literally shaped and chiseled by hand), and feeling that every single tile is completely unique as a result.
Some also consider the small flaws to be part of the charm (within reason).
Many people can’t tell the difference once installed, but I can, and it bugs me now that I’ve figured it out 😩
Can you spot the difference?
You might have to zoom in!

A lot of people prefer the faux Zellige tiles to the real ones for a couple of reasons:
- they are consistent in size and thickness (making them easier to install), and they don’t show any blemishes in the glaze, such as pits or chips
-they are high-fired, so they can be thinner (standard tile thickness), so they don’t take up quite as much space when installed
-they are much cheaper, typically half the price of the real deal.

More authentic Zellige tiles arrived today. They are indeed thicker than the Zellige tiles that arrived yesterday.
I had suspected that they were all made at the same factory and that one retailer was rounding up on the measurement while another was rounding down. But actually, BOTH are rounding down, b/c the 1/2” thick tiles are nearly 3/4”, and the 3/4” thick tiles are nearly 1” thick!

Some of the authentic Zellige tiles arrived today. Here they are compared to the faux Zellige I ordered weeks ago.
Can you guess which is which?
Which do you prefer?

The difference in price between real Zellige and faux is $1-3/sq ft (depending on retailer) so it’s more a matter of which color/size works best in the space next to the countertop. Ours will be white with slight variations in the shade, which is typical of Zellige.
So I guess I need to order laminate samples in various shades of white. 😩
More info about the tiles are included in the ALT text.
