CISA has warned that hackers continue to be capable of compromising industrial control systems using "unsophisticated methods" - suggesting that much more still needs to be done to secure them properly.
Meanwhile, hackers claim to have changed chlorine levels at Lebanese water facilities...

Arthur, you are making the incorrect assumption that we cannot use #WWS - wind, water & solar - to generate electricity.And electricity from new #WWS is cheaper than running a coal plant, and cheaper than building a new gas turbine plant. Look at the LCOE data.
Same with energy storage - people are realizing one can store electrical energy in many ways - even as heat stored in sand (cf Polar Night Energy and District Thermal Networks)
It's important to recognize the technologies are developing rapidly, and deploying rapidly. Things have changed a lot in the past 15 years.
Many critiques of renewables from the 2000 - 2010 period were wrong. They failed to consider that with increasing deployment improvements are made and costs come down. You see that in the cost vs time and deployment vs time data for renewables and storage.

In de eerste helft van 2024 zakte de fossiele stroomopwekking in Duitsland tot een nieuw laagterecord in de recente geschiedenis (< 70 TWh), een halvering op 7,5 jaar tijd. Wind, water en zon (#WWS) kwamen in de plaats (weliswaar geholpen door 11 TWh import in de eerste jaarhelft 2024).

Krijgen we hier reclame van Robrecht Bothuyne (CD&V) waarin hij pleit voor "betaalbare en duurzame energie via een mix aan kernenergie en groene energie".
Die heeft dus niet door dat dit een contradictie is. Veel hernieuwbaar impliceert geen nood aan baseload (nucleair) maar aan sturing, opslag en interconnecties.
Nucleair en #WWS (wind, water, zon) mixen gewoon niet. Ofwel moet je dan nucleair vaak moduleren, ofwel hernieuwbaar vaak knippen. Beiden zijn nefast voor de betaalbaarheid. #vk2024

@edwiebe no argument that we can change our own uses of energy sources, and it makes sense to do that. Not just energy sources, agriculture as practiced is a huge source of GHG (and ecosystem/biodiversity loss). There are many current practices we must change .
But if the new #WWS was used to meet existing energy demand, rather than offsetting new, highly energy intensive applications, we move off carbon based fuels a lot faster.
And giving a pass to applications of high energy demand & dubious benefit (the current AI & crypto which seem to not deliver as promised are key examples) by saying their energy demand doesn't matter, just doesn't make sense to me.
Fundamentally we are resource limited. Which makes deploying resources wisely a key need.

Dragos provides a 17 page report on the OT Cyber Threat Landscape for the U.S. Water & Wastewater Sector. Between 2006 and early 2023, there were 27 publicly disclosed cyber events within the United States water and wastewater sector, with only three of these events impacting industrial processes and operations directly. Lift and pump stations and treatment facilities present the largest potential digital attack surface in the sector, due to complex supply chains, vendor ecosystems, and connectivity between IT and OT systems. One of the most significant vulnerabilities in the water and wastewater sector is the exploitation of remote access technologies. Don't think that's quite accurate, 🌴&🪡. It's using it for fuel that's the dumb part, for oh so many reasons.And biomass is way too valuable to burn when we have cost effective #WWS.
If we want to stop fossil carbon extraction, biomass provides an alternative feedstock for many processes. (And it is a limited resource)
It's a biodiversity/ ecosystem threat if we rely on biomass for fuel. HANPP is a real concern and it's ignored in too many discussions re biomass.
And burning C generates major adverse health impacts - an air quality problem that our implementation of combustion systems has failed to solve.
So yes, capturing CO2 to transform it to something we can burn is dumb.
