With a book, but especially with a series, there’s always something that needs to be done.
That’s my thinking when I’m extremely tired. If I don’t trust myself with a primary task, or if I’m too weary, I’ll turn to a secondary task.
It’s important to me to maintain that link while listening to my body. It can also shift perspective, leading to unexpected inspiration.

Projects, like editing, but especially drafting, I often think of as being “in-story.” It’s focused immersion.
When that ends, when I pull back, my mind is no longer that defiant sandcastle. Instead, the ocean sweeps in and washes that deep focus away.
Now, I’m working on publishing Book-4, writing notes on other stories, and even walked to the library. My mind is roaming.

Another trip around the sun for me. I could lie and say I’ve big plans, but I don’t, though I’m hoping for a solo hike tomorrow.
Today, I’ll spend time with my characters. They’re the family I chose. A found family? Kind of.
I’m grateful to every one of them. They’ve helped me with life, and have gotten me through some truly awful times. How could I not be thankful for that?

Time for a book description.
It’s part of preparing Book-4 for publication, and becoming almost routine, but not quite. More like familiar, and I no longer fear it like I did the first time.
There are the creative steps and the routine steps. That makes it easier for me and my anxiety.
Anxiety and chickens, they’re a lot alike. Less fox chaos means more omelettes in my future.

What is leadership?
This come up a lot in the Kovenlore series as Riparia and others grapple with their ability, or inability, to lead.
There are great leaders of the past who are mentioned (Riparia is a Queen Vernathia fangirl). In the recent past, there are failed leaders on both sides.
Failed leaders, it becomes obvious, are what allowed toxic leadership to rise to the top.

Managing my time often requires parceling out tasks and chores so I don’t lose entire days, like today I’ll food shop.
That’s what happens when there’s only me to spread around.
Handling every aspect of writing, editing, and publishing is only one half of the equation. I’m also my cook, errand runner, and maid.
Then again, extreme multi-tasking has become the norm in the US.

I broke away from my Book-4 read-thru yesterday (briefly) when inspiration struck me. Not another story, but new notes to aid me when I work on Book-7.
When I draft, I draft, but when I edit, I’ll indulge inspiration if it aids other projects. It also provides a break and adds a little variety to my time.
Drafting is intense, but with other aspects of writing I’m deliberate.

As they day wore on yesterday, I felt increasingly better. I began a read-thru of Book-4 to verify it’s ready for the final spellcheck and publishing.
The book has a way of sneaking up on me. There’s an ominousness to it, the characters trying to save a nation weary, the antagonists growing evermore bold and deadly.
The middle book, it’s pivotal, but also pivots the story.

Still sick, but I’ve maybe turned the corner.
Yesterday, though, I was miserable. I accomplished what I had to, and then, feeling sorry for myself, settled down with my favorite story, a novella I wrote in 2020.
I makes me laugh, sigh, and cry, and I’ll never publish it. It isn’t that it’s poorly written, exactly the opposite. The problem is, it was cut straight from my heart.

I finished the targeted edit on the novella, and did so in the afternoon, all while battling a terrible cold, and the cold medicine.
This isn’t the first time I was more efficient when sick.
I’ve concluded that illness forces greater focus and slows my mind. When I’m feeling okay, which I do prefer, my thoughts can rampage, which is part of the reason why I listen to music.

Today I’ll finish the targeted edit on the novella. How wonderful that I also have a wicked cold. No problem. I’ve faced worse, like drafting with Covid last December.
How about, drafting during a relapse of my HP in November of 2016? Yeah, that was a fun time.

There are days when I can get little writing or editing done because it seems like everything conspires against me, or cause my own headaches. Those are frustrating.

Foreshadowing, I love it, and have it in every chapter.
Yup, every single chapter.
I’m kind of a freak that way. Do I expect that readers will take note of it? Nope. I do it largely because I love doing it.
There’s the chance a reader will notice it here while a different reader will notice it there. It is, though, subtle.
I’m not one for making the impact a brick in the face.

Some, I suppose, might view my stories as insufficiently trendy or controversial.
After all, they might say, all they do is identify the bad in the world and try to show the good.
Why doesn’t she revel in cruelty and violence? That’s our modern world, isn’t it? Virtuous people? Huh? And a lot of them are LGBT?
Where’s the cynicism? What’s with all the hope? What a loser.

Something I don’t mind including, in certain situations, is inadvertent humor on a character’s part in an otherwise serious scene.
It just seems more human to me.
In a moment of anger or sadness, for instance, when we aren’t thinking as clear, things are said that would otherwise be funny, but instead land as pitiful or sad. It can lend more potency to the moment’s emotions.

Just a handful of chapters remain to edit in the novella. Good gosh, this story was wordy.
I’m not sure how many words I’ve removed beyond “a lot,” but I know that Book-5 lost 13K words when I used the editing system on it.
When one word is substituted for wordy phrases of four or five words, that’s what happens. Yet, I read it afterwards and it seems like there’s more story.

A River in Each Hand (Kovenlore Book-2) was my first sequel. If you’ve never written one, you’re in for an experience.
I’ve lost count of how many times I scrapped the opening chapters (especially the first) and rewrote them. Why?
I kept trying to recap Book-1. As a reader, that bores me to tears, yet there I was doing it, until I treated Book-1 as backstory to be sprinkled in.

I moved here in 2014, which is when I took this picture. At the time, I was trying to return to hiking, but then I suffered a health relapse.
After that, this image became bittersweet.
Now, though, my health is largely recovered and I realize how this could be a stand-in for the fictional city of Vernathia in Carrdia that first appears in Book-5. It wasn’t intentional.

When Riparia reaches Lake Seclusion with Maniff in Book-1 of the Kovenlore Chronicles, it’s deathly still, mountains, cliffs, and conifer forest all around.
The biggest moment there is insecure Riparia becoming outraged by injustice and tragedy. She launches into an eloquent rant that foreshadows the future, even if she doesn’t realize it.
It’s one of my favorite moments.

There was a scene in Book-1 of the Kovenlore Chronicles that I struggled to visualize. In the infamous “uncomfortable” scene, Riparia and Maniff stop beside a stream in the Colossus Range.
In 2023, I found this location. Mind racing, I sensed it was significant, but didn’t immediately realize why. Later, I did.
Though I changed it a bit in the story, this was the inspiration.

If there’s anything that defines Riparia Dellbane, it’s moving water. She draws peace from it’s soothing music and energy from its current.
As a child growing up beside the Sentinel River, she’d sit on a huge boulder beside the river and wonder at where its waters went.
Little did she know, that same water flowed past her ancestral home, the ancestors she didn’t know about.
