I've been wanting to build up a dedicated winter rig to have a bike with spikes and fenders mounted ready to go for a while, but now it turned up almost a bit too pretty ;).
All City Space Horse, with almost exclusively parts I had lying around, I love how this build came together. It's all focused on simple maintenance and robustness:- 3 speeds, courtesy of a 44/ 32/ 24 triple in front with a 16 in the back, all possible due to a Paul Melvin chain tensioner
- old XT tripple MTB crankset
- XTR V-Brakes, the obvious star of the build (these were lying around in my parts box for about ten years now)
- Schwalbe studded winter tires (30s, the cheap ones, let's see how much use they get)
- Deore brake levers, they're quite nice (those I bought new)
- MTB flats, so I can wear warm/ any shoes. I have some quite warm winter MTB shoes, might switch to clipless pedals at some point

Actively snowing and -12 in broad daylight. Meteorological Spring? My ass!
Anyhow, #yegbike wise it's not bad as the snow is fluffy and you cut right through. Presumably it won't be cold and snowing long enough to build the sort of rutted ice cake that can make winter biking difficult.

We had an exhilarating cold 45 minute bike ride this evening as a few snowflakes fell. I froze my feet (should have worn warmer shoes), face and backside. No big deal.
It just felt so good to get out and pedal at a time when there's not many cars on the road. It really clears your head.
And there's that great tingly feeling when you get into the warmth afterwards.

Dry and warm at the end of February. The road crew hasn’t had to plow once this year. March and April can sometimes bring a lot of snow but … not gonna hold my breath.

Vážení, představuji vám chodník se Schrödingerovým cyklopruhem.
Zda je cyklopruh skutečný, se dozvíme až na jaře. Nebo ze Streetview, ale kde by pak byla ta zábava...Jízda po chodníku v tomto případě posvěcena hlídkou PČR 😎 (Technicky vzato 2x projeli kolem, 2x se usmáli a pokračovali v činnosti 😄)

ich habe endlich mein #Fahrrad aus dem Schnee ausgegraben (den Weg zum Fahrradschuppen) ;-)
Immerhin gab es heute keinen neuen Schnee, die Sonne schien und es waren nachmittags sogar leichte Plusgrade.
Die schönen Wege sind leider noch ziemlich glatt.
Hätte ich doch nur in Spike-Reifen investiert.
Aber dann hätte es ganz sicher gar keinen Schnee gegeben ;-)

First "sprint retrospective" of my studded tires. I roughly did 150km of commuting on them, probably 40% on iced roads. So totally worth it.
I did a headcount of the studs today, and on the front there are 3 missing or defective. On the rear they're still all good.
Hard thing is now deciding when to switch back to regular tires.
