There seem to be problems with the portable one, which we do not really understand, because the contents of both installers are identical, only the installation process is different with the standard one requiring elevation.

  19. Aptivi Choco Pack is now Aptivi Packaging

When we started making packages for our applications, we resorted to making Chocolatey packaging for our applications, such as Nitrocid and BassBoom. This was made in an effort to make installation of our applications easier and simpler, complete with documentation.

We have earlier introduced WinGet packaging for our applications, such as Nitrocid and BassBoom earlier this year to provide an easy way to install them, knowing that WinGet is shipped with Windows 11 as a built-in system component.

Now, we are very excited to announce that the Choco Pack organization on GItHub has been renamed to Aptivi Packaging!

This was done to better reflect its purpose as a repository for our packaging efforts for our applications, with more to come. Right now, you can access this organization to view two repositories: WinGet and Chocolatey metadata packages.

  25. Fixing WinGetCreate fork synchronization issue when submitting a WinGet manifest

WinGet is a package manager that is made by Microsoft for modern Windows systems. It simplifies application installation by downloading it from official sources without having to manually search the web. There are also helpers that make installation using WinGet much easier, such as UniGetUI.

When you are an application developer and you are submitting WinGet manifests using WinGetCreate, it uses the GitHub API to fork the winget-pkgs repository to your GitHub account to make submission faster. However, one day, you might run into this error message when you’re trying to submit a manifest:

PS C:\Users\aptiv\manifests\a\Aptivi\BassBoom\1.0.0> wingetcreate submit C:\Users\aptiv\manifests\a\Aptivi\BassBoom\1.0.0 Manifest validation succeeded: True Submitting pull request for manifest... The forked repository could not be synced with the upstream commits. Sync your fork manually and try again.

This message means that your fork has become so outdated that WinGetCreate couldn’t safely submit your manifest to create a pull requests for inclusion to the WinGet repository. This is clearly indicated in the message: The forked repository could not be synced with the upstream commits. Sync your fork manually and try again.

In order to fix this, you’ll have to manually synchronize your fork. Follow the below steps:

    1. Open your GitHub account, and search for your fork of winget-pkgs. For example, our fork of winget-pkgs is found under AptiviCEO/winget-pkgs.
      • You can search your fork with this URL: https://github.com/<ACCOUNT>?tab=repositories&q=winget-pkgs&type=&language=&sort=
    2. Press Sync Fork. You should see the below message saying that your fork is out of date.
    1. Press Update Branch. Your fork should then be synchronized to the latest commit that is pushed to the main repository, microsoft/winget-pkgs. Verify that your fork is up to date like the below picture:
    1. Now, submit your package again using WinGetCreate. If everything is OK, you should be able to submit a manifest, just like below:
PS C:\Users\aptiv\manifests\a\Aptivi\BassBoom\1.0.0> wingetcreate submit C:\Users\aptiv\manifests\a\Aptivi\BassBoom\1.0.0 Manifest validation succeeded: True Submitting pull request for manifest... Pull request can be found here: github.com/microsoft/winget-pk
    1. Verify that your pull request is created successfully with the expected contents. For example, the BassBoom v1.0 pull request has been created.
    2. At this point, wait for the moderation team to give a review on your pull request.

If you are still experiencing failures when pushing manifests to WinGet’s official repository using WinGetCreate, let us know!

  26. ----------------

    🎯 Threat Intelligence
    ===================

Executive summary: DSCourier describes a technique that invokes WinGet's configuration engine directly through its COM API to apply Desired State Configuration (DSC) YAML payloads, resulting in arbitrary PowerShell execution inside a Microsoft‑signed process (ConfigurationRemotingServer.exe) without winget.exe, powershell.exe or cmd.exe in the observable process tree.

    Technical details:
    • The technique targets the WinGet configure capability that consumes YAML-based DSC resources.
    • Payloads use PSDscResources/Script to run arbitrary PowerShell logic; execution occurs via the configuration host process rather than a traditional PowerShell executable.
    • The COM API interop layer is used to invoke the configuration engine directly, removing the winget.exe CLI process from the initial execution chain.
    • The author documents YAML construction, an interop wrapper that calls the COM interfaces, and the resulting process tree where the top-level trusted binary is ConfigurationRemotingServer.exe.

    Analysis:
    • Running DSC Script resources inside a Microsoft-signed binary creates a living‑off‑the‑land (LOTL) execution vector that may bypass telemetry focused on common hosts like powershell.exe.
    • Visibility loss occurs at the initiation point: no winget.exe command line is logged when using the COM API approach, reducing forensic artifacts visible in standard process creation logs.
    • The approach preserves signed‑binary provenance while enabling arbitrary code execution, increasing difficulty for EDR heuristic rules that rely on suspicious parent/child relationships or command lines.

    Detection:
    • The original winget configure method is detectable via process command line searches such as:
process.name: "winget.exe" and process.command_line: (configure or configuration or dsc)
    • For the COM API technique, detection requires monitoring of DSC-related host processes and behavioral indicators inside ConfigurationRemotingServer.exe, such as unexpected DSC resource usage, abnormal network retrieval of YAML content, or scripted activity originating from that process.

Mitigations / Defensive notes (as presented):
    • Instrumentation should expand visibility beyond common hosts to include signed configuration hosts and inspect invoked DSC resources and YAML content sources.
    • Correlate file retrievals of YAML payloads with subsequent activity in configuration host processes and flag atypical PSDscResources/Script usage in enterprise environments.

  37. BassBoom is now available via WinGet!

Starting from today, BassBoom, which is a cross-platform MPEG music player written in C# with libmpg123 as the backend library, is now available via WinGet! This was done as part of our package efforts to make installation easier for our users.

Previously, BassBoom was made available in the official Ubuntu PPA, the Windows Installer format, the Arch Linux PKGBUILD format, in Chocolatey package format, and in NuGet package format.

Now, we took a step further into doing what we did previously to Nitrocid to make installation easier for BassBoom users via WinGet, which is a package manager that lets you install programs with packages as the medium seamlessly with the command line interface. It eliminates the need to perform a web search to download a piece of software, which saves time and effort.

To learn more about how to install BassBoom using WinGet and the package release method, consult the Aptivi Newsroom article below.

  38. Nitrocid 0.1.0.x and 0.2.0.x for ARM64 is now available on WinGet!

Last month, we have announced the availability of Nitrocid 0.1.0.x and 0.2.0.x for the traditional AMD64 Windows systems with WinGet as the installation method. This made the installation of Nitrocid easier and smoother without having to install a separate package manager or to manually go to our GitHub.

Now, we are very excited to announce that we have made a significant progress regarding the packaging of Nitrocid 0.1.0.x and 0.2.0.x for ARM64 systems. Starting from today, you can now install Nitrocid 0.1.0.x and 0.2.0.x on ARM64 systems with WinGet!

Snapdragon X and other Windows systems that use ARM64 as the processor architecture can now experience the same smooth installation flow, which simplifies the installation experience, given that we understand that WinGet is shipped with Windows 11 these days.

You can install Nitrocid 0.2.0.x and 0.1.0.x using WinGet on ARM64 systems using the following commands:

    • Nitrocid 0.2.0.xwinget install Aptivi.Nitrocid.0.2.0.x
    • Nitrocid 0.1.0.xwinget install Aptivi.Nitrocid.0.1.0.x

The documentation will be updated shortly to reflect the status of Nitrocid’s WinGet packages as a new installation method.

Please note that the updated packages may not be always available, and updates can take from a minimum of few hours to a maximum of few days to propagate, depending on the version being distributed.
