@cbctop_mirror The British and Canadian victory in the Battle of Queenston Heights did not end the #WarOf1812. #American invasion attempts in #Canada continued for two more years. The heroism of General Brock was certainly an inspiration of those who ‘filled the breach’.
For instance, the 104th Regiment of Foot *marched* to Ontario from New Brunswick during the unusually harsh winter of 1813 to repel #Americans in Kingston and again in #Niagara. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/104th_(New_Brunswick)_Regiment_of_Foot

@brian_gettler A refreshing take on the conflict is Alan Taylor's The Civil War of 1812. "In this North American civil war, brother fought brother in a borderland of mixed peoples." #Cdnhist #AmericanHistory #Warof1812 #Canada

"The Star-Spangled Banner" is the #nationalAnthem of the #UnitedStates. The lyrics come from the "Defence of Fort M'Henry", a #poem written by American lawyer #FrancisScottKey on September 14, 1814, after he witnessed the bombardment of #FortMcHenry by the #British #RoyalNavy during the #BattleOfBaltimore in the #WarOf1812. Key was inspired by the large #USFlag, with 15 stars and 15 stripes, known as the #StarSpangledBanner.

I am reading Edward Tufte's incredible tome "Beautiful Evidence" and it connects my data nerd with my design nerd so well. It has me thinking about all kinds of ways evidence is designed in #SRE.
Searching for some online resources, I found what looks like an amazing course, and the whole syllabus is apparently in GitHub pages. Here's the one on the thing I learned about today, Charles-Joseph Minard's map of the War of 1812:

... the defeat of the US military assault on the Canadas is seen as an important stage in the development of a distinct Canadian identity. Note how the 200th Anniversary Royal Canadian Mint silver dollar features a British sergeant, a Voltigeur Canadien, and an Iroquois warrior.
Is there a source for these words ascribed to the 13 year old Jacob Cline?
>>The Americans were in high spirits, and when I said I was Canadian, one of the officers laughed and said, "You’ll soon be under the Yankey government, my boy." I was sassy, like most boys of my age, and I said, "I’m not so sure about that." <<

In the USA, the War of 1812 has been seen as a triumph for the young republic, with Andrew Jackson's victory at the Battle of New Orleans setting the US commander on the road to national pre-eminence, ensuring the independence from European powers of the US itself, and igniting in the hearts of the US citizenry a patriotic flame that has never since been entirely extinguished.
Cooler heads note that the as far as the UK and the US were concerned, the provisions of the 1814 Treaty of Ghent restored the status quo ante. Any "decisive victory" of the US figured more in the American imagination rather than the military realities.
The US stamp from the Cold War era does its best to combine a celebration of the US victory at New Orleans with an assurance of the Atlantic alliance with the sometime enemy.
In other parts of North America....

18 June 1812 saw the United States declare war on Britain.
Today the war is barely remembered in the UK; if it receives any notice, it is usually as a sideshow to the Napoleonic wars.
This lack of attention stems in part from the resolve of successive British governments in the 20th century to minimize unnecessary friction as they sought to maintain good relations with the USA.
This willed forgetting trickled down into the larger British culture.
Yet, as can be seen from this 1909 illustration of the arms of the Ross-of-Bladensburg family, the war was not consigned to oblivion in the century following its 1815 conclusion.
Robert Ross was the Anglo-Irish commander of the forces that in 1814 defeated the Americans at Bladensburg in Maryland and then marched into D.C, where they set fire to the White House and the Capitol.
(I have no idea why a circumflex has been placed over the E in the illustration.)
In North America, the war has been remembered very differently...

Mr. #Trump is greatly misinformed about #Canadians wanting Canada to be the #USA's 51st state. Well, he's greatly misinformed about most things, but this is recent.
Mr. Trump, please find a good book on each of the following points, and get one of your #toadies to read it to you:
1) None of Canada's 10 #provinces and 3 #territories is named The #Sudetenland.
2) The last time a #US #president decided he'd like to take over #Canada, we marched to #Washington and burned it to the ground. You might have heard a song we wrote about it.
3) We're the reason the White House is white. It didn't start out that way.
Jingoism, bluster, lies, delusions, and dementia isn't a great combination of characteristics for a U.S. president. Why'd you Americans decide to add "convicted felon" and "sex abuser" to that list?

@PaulaticsHere’s the main Canadian Encyclopedia entry for the US invasion of Canada in the War of 1812 for reference.

This was the not the first time however that the United States attempted to share its revolution further north however. That invasion wasn’t embraced by Quebec quite the way the Americans expected despite the best efforts of propaganda, not to mention an assault on the walled city of Quebec under the command of US General Richard Montgomery in a snowstorm on December 31, 1775.
