Now I am a better botanist than a birder - especially when it comes to photographs, so I've borrowed this pic.

Its a Piping Plover on the shore in Nova Scotia. Piping Plovers are Endangered in Canada - they breed on beaches, so are vulnerable to people and their dogs. They are featured on the Province's Conservation licence plate.
