Another lovely surprise: #HopaLide has been reviewed in Ethnomusicology by my dear colleague Jana Belišová – an ethnomusicologist and one of the leading experts on Romani music. I'm grateful she devoted so much care to the film, and, like David Verbuč before her, she also raises thoughtful critical points. I genuinely appreciate reviews that don't stop at praise.

    The review is here:

One of the highlights was a wonderful screening at the Romani Music between Heritage and Politics summer school in #Budapest. Such an engaged group of students, full of thoughtful questions and discussions.

And the venue? The #CEU Rooftop. I'm not entirely convinced there's a better open-air cinema anywhere (cf. pictures attached) 🙂

  5. The previous month, I also reconnected with fellow ethnomusicologist–filmmakers at the conference "New Perspectives in Audiovisual Ethnomusicology: Between Archives and New Technologies" in Cagliari. I revisited an older project there – the database=> visual.ethnomusicology.net

Seeing so many exciting initiatives reminded me how much I miss making ethnomusicological films. The #RomaniChords project keeps me busy now, but I hope to return to it someday.

  6. Those interested in the musical landscape of #HopaLide might also enjoy my earlier short film, "Rooted Musicians from #Klenovec". I recently had the pleasure of presenting it in Bratislava at a photo exhibition by Claude and Marie-José Carret – dear friends and photographers whose work lies at the heart of the film.

  7. For those who prefer listening to reading, here is a recording from the recent Between Research and Activism: Futures of Music and Minority Studies symposium, organised by my dear colleagues at the Music and Minorities Research Center in Vienna. In the talk, I reflect on making music videos grounded in ethnography and what I have learned from the creative processes behind it.

  8. And one more for those who enjoy reading: a new open-access review of #HopaLide by David Verbuč has just been published in Music & Minorities. It stands out for its close scene-by-scene analysis and engagement with the film’s broader academic afterlife, while also offering fair and thoughtful critique.

  9. Bonus tip: if you want to experience the argument about movement to the fullest, try this HTML version of the preprint. It includes embedded multimedia that *actually* move. (Could this be the first moving preprint in the history of academia? Possibly! Either way, here it is =>)

  10. The article proposes thinking about ethnographic filmmaking through different forms of movement and – using Hopa lide as a case study – traces both the history and contemporary practice of movement in ethnographic film. It also invites filmmakers and researchers to reflect more critically on how movement shapes anthropological knowledge.

  11. If one academic article is not enough, you may enjoy another piece just published in Visual Studies. The article approaches filmmaking through the lens of movement, exploring how camera mobility shapes ethnographic knowledge in the film Hopa lide.

You can access the article here =>

    🧵4/11

  12. The article also reflects on what I call the hegemony of the story in contemporary #documentary filmmaking – the expectation that films revolve around strong protagonists and clear narrative arcs. Hopa lide deliberately resists this logic, experimenting with a multi-chapter ethnographic form with no clearly defined #story.

  13. First, my article on the making of the ethnographic film Hopa lide and the question of Romani representation in documentary cinema has been published in Visual Anthropology Review.

The article explores collaborative filmmaking as a response to dominant portrayals of Roma and examines how audiovisual practice can generate anthropological knowledge. Free access for #ResearchGate users.

  14. This summer marks three years since the premiere of my ethnographic film #HopaLide.

That is usually the moment when films start to feel a little old. In academia, however, they often gain a second life thanks to slower publication timelines. That second life is now unfolding through academic outputs reflecting on the film.

Enough, in fact, for a whole thread. Let’s dive in 👇

  16. For those who understand #Slovak, I had the pleasure of talking with Romano fórum about my long-term research among Romani musical communities in Slovakia – specifically about my film #HopaLide, my project on #RomaniChords, the myth of Romani #MusicalBlood, and – last but not least – why Roma should have a stronger voice in researching their own culture.

  18. Is it already cold in #Prague for an open-air cinema? Well, not for #HopaLide !

Thanks Metaculture, for organising another fascinating screening of my film in my hometown (home-quarter, in fact) and thanks to all brave people who showed up despite the autumn was definitely creeping up!

  21. Already packing for #RAI, checking this year's incredible selection of #Ethnomusicology Film Competition =>

    raifilm.org.uk/festivals/2025/

#HopaLide will be screened this Thursday in the Watershed Cinema (09:40 am).

If there are any #Bristol -based #VisualAnthropology fans (or indeed wanderers from elsewhere), let me know, I have two guest tickets available.

    Can't wait already!

  22. So it's now official: my latest ethnographic film #HopaLide has been selected for the #RAI FILM Festival in Bristol. What pleasure to be part of this traditional #VisualAnthropology event!

You can either attend the screening on the 12th of June in the Watershed Cinema (starting at 09:40 in the morning – I'll be there!) or watch the film between the 16th of June and – 16th of July online (in the company of over 90 ethnographic films from 36 countries!)

  23. I am happy to have the opportunity to present #HopaLide at this year's #Ethnografilm, possibly the most fun #VisualAnthropology festival in the world.

Over 100 #EthnographicFilms (s), most of the people in the audience are filmmakers, and this is all set in the atmosphere of springtime #Paris. What else to wish for?

Thanks to the #CzechCentre in Paris for supporting my stay (again)!

  24. ...and finally, a little photo follow-up for this busy #HopaLide November!

Here's the picture from the seminar of the Czech Association for Social Anthropology.

We really wondered whether anyone would show up for an event commencing at 17:00 on Friday. And yet, there was a lovely crowd both on-site and online.

A big hand to the #CASA association (especially Alžběta Wolfová) for putting this event together!

  25. ... and here's also a little photographic follow-up from the latest #HopaLide screening @ Academy of Romani Studies in Prague.

I enjoyed the discussion very much, and I was especially grateful for the feedback from my Romani colleagues...

November with #HopaLide continues; there are more screenings coming – one in #Cagliari (#Sardinia, #Italy) and #Prague (#Czechia). Just scroll-up this thread for details...

  26. A couple of pictures from last week's screening of #HopaLide @ #Ethnofilm in Žilina...

The turnout was amazing. I was impressed to see how many of today's students are interested in ethnographic cinema!

Kudos to everyone involved in putting this great event together (not an easy task considering the current political climate in #Slovakia)
