this *sounds* like SFMTA agreed to painting full 20-foot red curbs at every intersection, rather than the mere 10 feet at stop-controlled intersections that has been traffic engineer Ricardo Olea's policy. if so, good! parent organizing worked!

Just after last weekend's tornado warning, an SFPD officer driving too fast for conditions struck and killed a pedestrian near Bayshore & Industrial. The unnamed pedestrian is the 39th traffic fatality of the year, a victim of car-focused streets and police impunity.
#SFPol #TrafficViolence #VisionZero #visionZeroSF -
"There have been a disproportionate number of pedestrian fatalities along 16th Street, Walk SF reported. Three other people have been killed within the four-block stretch between Valencia Street and Harrison Streets in the last four years."
-
Exploring new horizons in victim-blaming, Jeff Tumlin claims the "walk sign [sic] said not to cross" at Parnassus and Stanyan when a driver killed an elderly pedestrian.
There are no walk signals at that intersection.

A driver killed another pedestrian. We are now on track for the worst year of pedestrian fatalities since SF adopted Vision Zero in 2014.
London Breed has been mayor for 6 of those 10 years.

Right outside Glen Park BART. It’s never a surprise where these happen, it’s like: of course. Bosworth St was widened for the planned Crosstown Freeway, and then not narrowed again when that got canceled. https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/pedestrian-dead-crash-san-francisco-glen-park/3626859/

SF Bike is saying that someone riding a bike was hit and killed by a driver on Bayshore south of Industrial St Friday afternoon.

DId you know that there is data supporting the hypothesis that lower speed limits in cities reduces collisions, injuries and fatalities? Maybe SF should consider 20mph as well?

The application for the committee on West Portal's redesign doesn't include an option for, "I transfer between transit lines at West Portal," which is what the family of four whose deaths led to the redesign were doing.

"One would think, now that such a predictable horror has actually happened, that the merchants who contributed to it would have the modicum of decency to shut the fuck up. Instead, they've created a web page and continue to protest any restriction to driving, right in the shadow of the shrine to the dead family."

someone’s going to die at Alabama and 16th St. it might be me. this heavily traveled intersection to get to the SPCA doesn’t have a signal, bulbouts, or even a striped crosswalk. #VisionZeroSF

Survey is up for #WestPortal redesign
I told them to include a cut-out for bikes to enter Lenox northbound, even if cars can't. It's the way to the rec center and school, and it's safer to design for this than the alternative (bikes going the wrong way/on sidewalk). #VisionZeroSF

are politicians *ever* going to figure out that X is far less useful than Twitter used to be as a platform, because threads and profiles are now broken without an account, and they need to post their stances on issues somewhere else?
anyway... Ryan Khojasteh, challenging Brooke Jenkins for DA, has a good statement on the slap on the wrist given to a driver who killed a child at 4th & King: https://twitter.com/ryankhoj/status/1780990613019877538 #sfPol #VisionZeroSF

I'm glad Noah talked to a person with a disability for this article, who could eloquently express why cars blocking sidewalks are not in fact harmless

3-car crash at 18th St & Valencia about an hour and a half ago. One car hit the Taqueria El Buen Sabor building, damaging a column.
(quoted image desc: firefighters work in a taped off area around the taqueria on the corner, with a crashed car nearby and people milling around.) #VisionZeroSF

📢NOTE THE LOCATION CHANGE FOR TOMORROW!
If you want to accelerate progress on #VisionZeroSF, show it by showing up tomorrow if you can.
12:30PM on the Polk Street steps of City Hall.

There have been many news stories about SF failing to meet its 2024 #VisionZeroSF goal. Have any mentioned that the goal was not just 0 fatalities, but 0 serious injuries too?
-
North side SF is full of 3-lane one way roads.
They all encourage dangerous speeding and do nothing to help people choose walking, transit, or biking to meet our climate goals.
Andrew Zieman was killed on one with this same layout.
They should all be immediately converted to 2 lanes plus a 2-way protected bikeway. Cheap, makes everyone safer (even drivers), massively expands bike network. #BikeSF #VisionZeroSF

After a child was killed by a turning driver at 4th & King, Mayor Breed said the city would look at closing all double turn lanes.
That was August. SFMTA is still individually analyzing every intersection to see whether fixing a known unsafe design would back up cars.
Why don't they come out and say what the exchange rate is for vehicle delay minutes <=> human lives?

Richard Zieman, father of Andrew, the teacher killed on Franklin Street in front of his school in 2021, to SFMTA board:
"The speed on that street is such that all those things you should be aware of in a school zone—kids running out, parents chasing kids—no chance to stop. The other upsetting thing is nobody was surprised. 'It's Franklin Street,' you know? [Speed] cameras are great...but that's not all that needs to be done."

“I want metal, concrete bollards on the side of bus shelters, intersections that are known to be dangerous like this, where we know there’s multiple things going on — cars, trains, pedestrians, and kids.” - @myrnamelgar
Thank you Supervisor Melgar. Best statement yet from an elected official or agency.

SFPD: "We do no [sic] believe that traffic engineering was a factor in this case."
Shut up, SFPD. That's not up to you to decide, and the point of #VisionZero is traffic engineering is *always* a factor in traffic crashes! #SFPol #VisionZeroSF

“Collision-based approaches are… reactive and can’t account for suppressed trips where users felt too unsafe to bike in the first place.”
A 2019 analysis found evidence of dangerous biking conditions hidden by the high-injury map in Bayview, Inner Richmond, Dogpatch, Excelsior, Noe Valley, Visitacion Valley and near Balboa Park.

This ranking biases toward places lots of people walk/bike to begin with. Tons of pedestrians/cyclists at Market & Octavia = tons of opportunities for injury.
Very few people walk or bike near 19th Ave & Sloat, but it still made the citywide top 10. So if you're wondering where, if *you* decide to walk there, you'll have the highest risk of getting hit, 19th Ave & Sloat is by far the most dangerous on the list.

SF not only failed to reduce traffic deaths and severe injuries to zero, but failed to reduce them at all.
City Traffic Engineer Ricardo Olea, however, says he would still give us an “A for effort.” Activists are “missing the point,” which was just to start a conversation, not actually save lives.
It was Olea who vetoed curbside protected bike lanes on Valencia in Feb 2020.

This article gets at the complexities & challenges in winning more aggressive street redesigns to actually slow down drivers. Sigh. 😑
We need every possible solution to #SlowOurStreets, & this is a disappointing tale.
