  1. LOL, another think piece about "AI may create a permanent underclass".

    The tally of the wealth redistributed upwards from the bottom 90% between 1975 and 2023 is just shy of $ 80 trillion according to the RAND Institute.

    We were well on the way to a permanent underclass without AI. Even a chatbot could probably tell you that, 😉.

  6. The widespread use of #ArtificialIntelligence LLMs will render a large segment of the #population illiterate and increasingly incapable of reasoning and thinking for themselves—the future social #underclass exposed to unprecedented exploitation and manipulation by the new masters of algorithms. The #enlightment era seems declining rapidly. Does anyone see the beginnings of a #luddite #resistance somewhere? Am I too #pessimistic ?

  8. #AI Is a Lot of Work. As the technology becomes #ubiquitous, a vast #tasker #underclass is emerging and not going anywhere. #AI #learns by finding #patterns in enormous quantities of #data, but first that data has to be sorted, #tagged by people, a vast #workforce mostly hidden behind machines. It’s difficult and #repetitive work. A several-second blip of footage took eight hours to annotate, for which a college graduate in #Nairobi was paid about $10. theverge.com/features/23764584

  9. How the other half lives: Jordan Peele's US (2019) plays funny games with the socioeconomic disparities in the American dream. Screens today, 8.40pm at BFI Southbank NFT1 #InDreamsAreMonsters #Horror #Doppelgängers #SocialDIvide #Underclass projectedfigures.com/2019/03/2

  10. And it really doesn't matter that tankies are going to attack me for saying it. Yeah the Marxist-Leninist will claim "this is all a part of capitalism", because it fits their world view.

    But for the rest of us not so much into 1800-century economic political theory, it's actually useful to draw this dividing line because of the paradigm shift building for rent introduces to building for profit.

    #Capitalists as we know it, are now an #underclass Easier to talk about it like this.

  11. Tom Waters/IFS: 'We spend more than £100bn each year on working-age benefits. About half of it now goes to families in work.... The challenge here is that the kind of work they have tended to produce has been part-time & low-paid – which generally does not serve as a stepping stone to higher-paid work further down the line';

    in other words #benefits' terms engineer a class of #workers stuck in rubbish insecure & precarious jobs; a new #underclass made by #Tory policy!
