  1. Timothy George said "the visual story of Toroku is new graves and old houses" or maybe new graves and falling houses... This past weekend I didn't think to (or have time to) take many pictures of graves and pictures from previous visits are not on this computer.. But I've wanted make montages inspired by that comment for some time. These are the best I can do right now, after I've learned more GIMP. #Toroku

  2. A beautiful book came in the mail today. The Japanese title is hard to translate in less than a few sentences, but it's by #KazuyukiKawahara, one of the four pillars of Kyushu's #DocumentaryLiterature #記録文学 genre. His newest big books spans gaps left from over 50 years of writings on the beautiful mountain hamlet, #Toroku that was poisoned by arsenic mining and production. It's an honor to receive the book and include it with similarly beautiful and important works.

  3. I was in #Toroku over the weekend learning with Asia Arsenic Network NGO, Miyazaki Prefecture's Forestry Dept, and Minami Kyushu University. The arsenic mine and kilnes that sickened and killed people is considered pollution (#公害 or #CommonsDamage). One speaker pointed out that when damage reaches beyond the workplace they are chalked up to #pollution, until then they are chalked up to #OccupationalHazards. He made me re-read a page of #Galeano's #ChildrenOfTheDays to remember #Ramazzini.
