  4. Shout out to @tess_machling for the #torc education via #mastodon on what this was before I saw it at the British Museum. My friends and I commented on the incredible craftsmanship seen in these.

  10. The Killarney National Park is stunningly beautiful. We started at Muckross House and walked north of Muckross Lake before we hiked up the first part of Torc Mountain (535m). The trail goes east around the mountain before it goes further up to the summit. 7hrs/20km hike with having good weather the whole way. Exceptional.

Putting all 8... yes, 8!!...#gold sheet torus torcs in one place: new info on the Snettisham Great torc, a little Snettisham scrapper & part 1 of the story of the Knaresborough ring (...part 2 is coming in a big paper in 2024! 😘)

    It's good to torc!

Hi, we are The Online Radio Club founded in 2017 offering a traditional club format (constitution, officers, regular meet-up) but using an online conference room for easy access - this was established years before COVID!

We meet weekly at 1930UK and, after a catch-up round table, we discuss topics from the hobby to broaden minds, gain different perspectives and help nurture the newcomers. More details available at onlineradioclub.org

  15. Help! I need lots of images - drawn, photos, glass, sculpture etc - from 19th/first half 20th century that show someone wearing a torc (or related) necklace.

Can be Iron Age, Picts, Roman or Prehistoric. This kinda thing.

Please RT. Thank you so much! ❤️

    #Archaeology #Prehistory #Torc

ALT: Images show various 19th century visions of what Picts, Celts looked like. There's a lot of woad and much romanticism.

    alt-text
    Two images of the sword.
Both are centred on the hilt.
The hilt is made from the one material and is verdigris green with a flat-ish pommel.
    The handle has herringbone ridges.
The hilt piece overlaps the blade piece with a flattened semicircular shape, reminiscent of a #Torc?
    The blade is greyish.
The sword is lying flat and only the hilt and upper blade are exposed.
Two small arrowheads and a upper rib bone are visible next to the sword.

  17. Hoss is a torc who is so very complicated and I both love and hate him. He's a lot of fun --- he owns a place called Inn Harm's Way, a place where people can go and watch people fight for a price. He's known as a very shady figure but he has a very huge heart when it comes to things that count.

I loved drawing him and I am excited to actually get to use him in things again.

  18. That thing when you post about a #torc you've been looking at & suddenly look at photo close up & realise that, yes, the thing attached to this torc *also* has crap dripped on it, just like so much of the stuff attached/used to repair/added to torcs, but never the complete torcs.

Yet another example of how they were mixing & matching #Snettisham hoards. Honestly, these hoard deposits happened quick - really, really, really quick.

  19. Having ground to a halt with a couple of other projects (one day we'll get the data we need... but until then, all kinds of fun with #torc deposition distribution will have to wait) I've been messing about with this - it & its broken buddy are intriguing.

Looks like we've found 2 more torcs made by the same person & an unusual #metalworking technique.

  20. Working with the "everything is 0.000001% #gold " theory, it would take the following number of melted tomatoes to make one #Snettisham Great #torc :

    Oh hang on...

    Wait a minute...

    Ok, forget that...

We just flog this little selection on Ebay and we'll get the £40k needed instead. 😉🤣🤣

  21. Searching for #gold stuff and came across a link to this on Pinterest...

A new #torc ! And the same cage terminals as a broken one from #Snettisham (the only other known example of this type).

Except this one has zero provenance of when and where it was found and was sold from a private collection - at Christies in 2013 - to a private buyer.

Sigh...I often wonder how many more there are out there???

    So depressing...

  23. 3 years ago today, we started The Big Book of Torcs.

    We've had 10,129 visitors from 58 #countries (2/3 from #UK) who've read 18,070 pages. Averaging +3000 visitors/year.

Independently peer reviewed paper on Grotesque #torc: 2843 visits. Blogs have done well, with #Snettisham Torc Finders blog: 1538 reads. Near Stowmarket torc piece: 1880. Every page has +300 reads.

I continue to be amazed. It's certainly the way to get research out - here's to 2023! ❤️

  24. @thesweetcheat @tess_machling thanks much . . #Cornovia ordered . . & I now know what a #torc is . . ☺️

  25. @cagedbeatnik here are a couple of pictures. The first is of Zennor Quoit from Craig Weatherhill's Cornovia (essential), the other is by Andy Norfolk and shows Chûn Quoit, it's from Cheryl Straffon's West Penwith guide.

Bonus #torc for @tess_machling in the latter.

  26. For #BoxingDay I give you...

...a #torc in a box from the Somerset hoard from County #Galway, #Ireland, of course!! 😊

"The torc is now bent into a double-coiled spiral: it is stated to have been found in this condition within a box"

  27. Ok folks, I think you're ready for the #goldfinch equivalence!

Not many folks know that every living thing is 0.00001% #gold (yes, really - including humans!!)

Therefore, if you...um...'extracted' the gold you could, theoretically, make a #torc.

Soooo, by that logic, 7,588,000,000 goldfinches would get you enough gold for a #Snettisham Great torc.

[It would also get you a fully deserved telling off from the RSPB! 🤣]

  28. Close up of the filigree #torc from the #BlairDrummond #hoard which was found in 2009.

This torc is likely about 2300 years old and is very distinctive, unusually showing a very #European (probably #Greek or #Etruscan) style of #making . However, there's no reason to suggest it has to have come from continental Europe, as #craftspeople and #ideas were travelling all over at this time.
