  1. 55 years ago today, on October 2, 1968, the Mexican army and other state forces ambushed and opened fire on a rally of high school and college students in the Plaza de las Tres Culturas in Tlatelolco, Mexico City.

At least 300 to 400 people were killed, thousands were injured, and 1,345 were arrested.

The goal of the attack, orchestrated by then-Interior Minister (and later president) Luis Echeverría, was to crush to the growing student movement - which had organized itself as the National Strike Council across multiple universities and high schools in Mexico City and beyond - before the start of the Olympics in the city on October 12. Along with organizing across campuses, students were also successfully mobilizing labor to their side, manifesting mass dissatisfaction with nearly 40 years of PRI one-party rule in the country.

Echeverría died in impunity at the age of 100 in 2022.

This year, as with every year, there will be marches around Mexico commemorating and demanding justice for the Tlatelolco Massacre, including one at 4pm in Mexico City that starts at the Plaza de las Tres Culturas and heads to the Zócalo.
