  1. Amulet of the Egyptian god Thoth (or Djehuty, to call him by his actual Egyptian name) in his form as a seated baboon, patron deity of scribes.

The crescent and full moon on his head reflect his lunar connection.

Dating from around the New Kingdom, the amulet is only 5.5 cm tall, and is in the collection at Manchester Museum.

  2. Carnelian bead from Egypt carved into the shape of a hyena's head, with that distinctive ridge of fur on its neck. Unprovenanced, sadly, but now in the collection at the Garstang Museum of Archaeology.

    Oh, one other thing ... it's literally a centimetre big ... 🤯🔬

This is actually a composite image made from 111 photos, using focus stacking and exposure bracketing. Photographed in 2002 for my #TinyEgypt project. Photo © me.

  3. Sunday mornings are for ... a bit of relaxed image editing. I've been working on this image of an amulet from the Garstang Museum of #Horus as a #falcon, wearing the double crown of Egypt (the Pschent, or Sekhemty - 'the Two Powerful Ones' - to use the ancient Egyptian name).

The slightly odd, yellow colour is geniune. Looking closely at it, I think it's a yellow faience, which you see less often than the commonly used blue and green #faience.

  4. I've just launched a brand new set of community pages on the #TinyEgypt website for members of the Tiny Egypt Society. Members now have their own profiles, social feeds & can connect with me & other members, a little like Facebook. But with fewer people. (I haven't quite managed to reach half the world's population. Yet ... 😈)

  5. That first day back after new year is always going to be one for catching up with stuff, but I did manage to fit in putting the raw images of this amulet through the focus stacking software 😊

It's one of the amulets I photographed at Manchester Museum in early December for Tiny Egypt and depicts the god Shu - the air - with his arms up to support the sky.

  6. Today I spent some time working on this magnificent little lapis lazuli Bes amulet at Manchester Museum - the intensity of the colour of the lapis lazuli is just gorgeous, and he still has remnants of gold leaf on his head 😍

  7. Today I've been working on one of the images I captured the other week of this fabulous and rather unusual human-headed Bastet at #Manchester Museum for #TinyEgypt.

What you can't see here (because I've zoomed in in Photoshop) is that she has two little kitties sitting by her front legs 🥹

No provenance details right now as the museum's database is ongoing a revamp, so I'm having to wait a little. But it's likely Late Period-ish.

  8. #TinyEgyptTuesday is coming to you this week directly from the stores at Manchester Museum, where I'm working on this fascinating four-sided faience statuette.

  9. This week's #TinyEgyptTuesday is a 3.4 cm faience amulet of a composite deity, with the body of #Bes, a ram's head and horns (#Amun ...?) and the wings of a falcon (#Horus) down his back, now in the Garstang Museum of Archaeology in #Liverpool. 10. Ancient Egyptian amulet of Thoth in his form of a seated baboon. His headdress is a full moon sitting atop a crescent moon, reflecting his role as a lunar deity. His name is inscribed on his chest.

He stands at just 5.5 cm tall and is in the collection at Manchester Museum.

I photographed him using a macro lens and this photo is part of my Shadow series within my #TinyEgypt photography project.
