Today wasn't an easy day, but here are two photos of excellent moments in the garden: reading my preordered copy of Molly Harper's cozy mystery novel A Cute Little Murder (80 pages in, I'm loving it!) and eating delicious cookies baked by my tween. I love that this is now a thing she does!

🌸 As we head full-on into Spring in the northern hemisphere (despite what the weather outside might be telling me), it makes me think of these lotus flowers from ancient Egypt that I photographed for Manchester Museum's 'To Have and To Heal' project in 2021.

The flowers were found on the chest of a 22nd Dynasty woman called Perenbast, a singer of the god Amun in ancient Thebes.

Bronze statuette (11.4 cm) of Harpocrates (Hor-pa-khered, 'Horus the Child'), the personification of the reborn morning sun. He's easily recognised by his crown, his 'sidelock of youth' hairstyle, his finger held to his mouth, and ... his complete butt-nakededness.

Amulet of the Egyptian god Thoth (or Djehuty, to call him by his actual Egyptian name) in his form as a seated baboon, patron deity of scribes.

The crescent and full moon on his head reflect his lunar connection.

Dating from around the New Kingdom, the amulet is only 5.5 cm tall, and is in the collection at Manchester Museum.

I have to admit we still haven't finished unpacking our new house (and I won't even try to shift any more boxes until well after my novel deadline!), but one part I have fully unpacked and organized is my new (inherited, 1930s) writing desk, and I LOVE it. 😍

(The gorgeous print in the second photo is by Martin Truefitt-Baker and was one of my best gifts ever.)

Thanks again to everyone who helped me shop for a good chair!
