It's been interesting how since USA politics became the story again, a couple of previously cosy-whimsy-fireside podcasts have revealed their value by simply reporting stories from the United States. I'm feeling a bit on my own over here in my little corner of New Zealand, feeling sad that today is the day the federal funding runs out for NPR and PBS back in my country of origin.
I don't know when I first heard NPR but I remember when I first started listening. I was alone, cleaning my college dorm room, listening to the radio, when I heard This American Life's episode "24 Hours At The Golden Apple," in which reporters document one entire day at a Chicago diner. I'd never heard anything like it.
After that, I discovered more. Fresh Air, A Prairie Home Companion, Philosophy Talk. It felt like my own personal discovery; it felt new and grown-up.
Listening to all the pledge drives back then, I rarely had the money to spare. I'm trying to make up for it now.

I will never be a skinny person, not unless there's some new miracle medication that comes out. Which will likely be dangerous anyway. My genes have the final say. I am who I am, and I have accepted that a long time ago.
If I could make skinny people understand one thing, it's simply that being fat is not a choice. No more than being bald. Or being short. Or being old. I have former-friends who still believe that myself and my wife are just not trying hard enough. We are fat because of a moral failing.
Thanks to science we know better. Some of us do anyway.
TV shows like "The Biggest Loser" do nothing to promote the science. They promote the idea that weight is a choice. They are designed for drama, not reality. The human body, however, is far more complicated than "eat less, exercise more."

It makes me worry about the fact that there's a solid quarter of our population who have lost touch with reality in a way that they cannot be reclaimed to anything like rationality. In a way that makes them hate and fear the rest of us and the rest of the world, willing to follow our most evil politicians.
This cannot end well.

This week's #ThisAmericanLife is brutal but important...
The story of a reporter and his family dealing with the father having gone off the deep end with “prophecy" Christianism and making a year-long bet on various absurd political conspiracy theories. Of course Dad lost, because he was making all sort of MAGA wish-fulfillment predictions. That failed to modify his outlook.I’m so glad that I don't have to deal with such nonsense. Neither of my parents came anywhere near that crap.

I got into the car to head to the shop and turned on the radio just in time to hear Susan Burton’s Act Three on this week’s This American Life about her #menopause transition. I cried the whole way to the shop.
