After buying the Legacy Collection edition of The Sims, I think I finally figured out why I can't seem to get into the other Sims games.

It's the aesthetic.

All of the games' aesthetics suit the times in which they were released. Because of that, the original game has a late 90s/Y2K aesthetic to it that appeals to so many of us in the retro games community.

It's like a charming final snapshot of American life before the 21st century.

The main issue still with #GamingOnLinux: 9/10 times "it just works". And really, it does! It's great!

But when it doesn't... Let's say I just lost 2 days of my live getting #TheSims4 to run on my #SteamDeck again due to it breaking on the latest EA app. Couldn't find a fix yet online, so had to test some stuff myself and come up with my own solution. Uploaded the whole procedure to #ProtonDB, so with the next content refresh it should be public.

But really, people who aren't as deep into it Linux and the technical side of gaming on it likely wouldn't have figured out how to make it run. My eventual fix made sense if you know how Wine and Linux work, it's not that complex once you got the answer. But for a random gamer who's not further into the topic (and just wants to play anyways)? A bit much to figure out from scratch...

Luckily it does get better at rapid pace the last few years, I haven't seen these kind of workarounds needed in ages (so don't take this post too discouraging). But it's a good reminder that these issues aren't gone yet, and will be a blockade (in bigger or smaller degree) for mainstream usage until they are.

Most historical buildings in my city are gone in the name of development. Language, culture, food, places, most are but memories.

From time to time I want to build a place that I can hide in. Not a mansion, but a simple town house, just pretend to live there alone with my plants, maybe also pets, till death.

So it's always this soloing way of playing. Built things here and there, no families, no kids except aliens or plantsims by accidents, no generations.

It feels like I skipped the majority of The Sims' gameplay.

So for the first time I created a bunch of roommates. The table is finally full. There still won't be any room for children.

I just remembered one thing I always wanted The Sims to do that Paralives actually hasn't done or planned to my knowledge.

MySims-style furniture building!

Putting custom furniture in your house that you designed yourself would be so sweet. That's why I like MySims! I just wish it were less of a grindfest and more of a simulation game!

In the hands of the Paralives team, I'm sure the furniture builder would turn into full CAD software somehow, given how well the build mode turned out. But if it were literally just the parts and templates from MySims with the Paralives pattern system instead of essence painting, I'd still love it.

I've been playing for a few hours so far, just making my household and home, though it is easy to start with the homes already prebuilt in the town and make randomized "Paras". Everyone is raving about the grid-free build system (though there is a grid if you want it). Anyway, it's relaxing and nice to have on my laptop when I have time to kill.

BTW, the price is about CA$50 until June 1st, when the 10% sale ends.

I did not expect to say this but #Paralives actually turned out amazing, wow. I really felt like it would end up mediocre with gameplay as an afterthought, but there's so many interesting and fun features in there.

Of course there's tons of bugs and incomplete features, but that's early access for ya. I trust the team to deliver more. Even at the current level, I feel like it's worth it though. What a refreshing game.
