For #BandcampFriday I picked up some of Jack de Quidt’s soundtracks for Friends at the Table, which I've been meaning to get for a bit.
Also, fellow Garages bandmember Riley, who is more talented than I will ever be, put out her first full album with her band Yuppie Supper and you should 100% pick it up right now.

Blaseball was a topic on tonight’s Um, Actually… & Brian David Gilbert mentioned The Garages. Wild to see this thing we did still getting seen out there.
On a somewhat related note: Fourth Strike Records (which formed out of The Garages) is doing a charity album with a bunch of our Song Jam tracks on it including (shh! spoilers!) my song about #NYTConnections. Proceeds will go to the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund.

No, YOU took the ending of #Blaseball poorly

…because of #Blaseball, I made a neat app (Blases Loaded) & met some really cool people at #SIBR, the “sabermetrics” of Blaseball. And THEY introduced me to #TheGarages, which is a team _and_ a band.
I joined them when they were making a lo-fi album, & I made a weird song about salmon. I collaborated with a bunch of great folks, sang backing vocals on an actual dang record, & most importantly, it rekindled my music-making. I’ve made SO much music in these last few years, thanks to them.

I had the idea for a while to just go completely opposite of that airy synth vibe and make a KMFDM-style cover of it, & when #TheGarages started working on a new Tribute Act release, I decided to work on it for that.
This resulted in a cover I’m really happy with; I feel like I nailed the KMFDM vibe pretty well, & the song just slaps with a heavy crunchy beat & guitars, & I think it works surprisingly well to drop into a chiptune+guitars thing in the breakdown.

Here's another fun one. After the lo-fi album we talked about on my #radioFreeFedi interview, the next thing I worked on was a #TheGarages project where we all did songs in an 80s style. I submitted an #Erasure pastiche of a song that was originally just vocals + ukulele called Garages Forever.
However, on that album there was _another_ track that just wouldn't leave my head, called Stars of Tomorrow, by Autumn.

First up is a song I wrote for Putrid Shark.
#PutridShark is a spinoff band from #TheGarages, the famous-in-certain-circles band making music for the web game Blaseball. We got to talking about the Icelandic dish hákarl, which turned to the idea of making a noise band.
I tried to think of the most putrid thing I could write a song about, and this one pretty much came to me all at once. It’s called Advice from a White Man…

Finally had a chance to hear my #radioFreeFedi interview. It came out great! Always interesting to hear which of my songs other people focus on.
The amusing thing is you got to hear @glumbaron speaking and my partner @Triluna singing “salmon” but you never hear me singing. 😂
As I was thinking that I realized a number of my songs I sing on have only been released through #TheGarages or #PutridShark. I need to roll some of those up into Bandcamp releases.

This is, honestly, what got me back into writing music. The combination of the pandemic wave, finding the Blaseball community, and finding a bunch of awesome folks writing #music and inspiring each other. I’ve sung “live” with #TheGarages, written a sea shanty about the time a giant squid called The Monitor ate a peanut god, and made some noise music with a spin-off band called #PutridShark. It’s been a wild ride and a total blast.

Somehow this turned into a joke about making a salmon-themed #LofiBeats thing, & someone mentioned that #TheGarages were making a lofi album *right then* so I said “*I* write music! It’s been a while, but I should try doing something.”
This turned into a real song, featuring spoken word by a fellow SIBR member & “salmon” chorus by @Triluna. Not only that, I was so inspired I wrote 3 other tracks for that album (called “percolate”).
