[...]Głównym wrażeniem, które zostało mi w głowie, jest „radiowość” The Dark. Składają się na to dwa czynniki: lekka, indie-rockowa albo wręcz czasem pop-rockowa produkcja, w niczym nie przypominająca żadnego z poprzednich płyt Wolfe, i wokal artystki, która ewidentnie miała ochotę pobawić się swoim głosem, barwami, a nawet skalą (całkiem wysokie nuty tu wchodzą jak na nią). Żadna z tych rzeczy nie jest wadą sama w sobie, ale… Czy to w ogóle jest jeszcze Chelsea Wolfe? Przypadkowa słuchaczka naprawdę mogłaby mieć wątpliwości. Rozpoczynający album kawałek „Cold” równie dobrze mógłby się znaleźć na płycie jakiejś altpopowej damskiej grupy typu, nie wiem, The Last Dinner Party albo Paris Paloma (na ile znam te brzmienia, przyznam, że to nie moja działka), kolejny „Seethe” budzi we mnie irracjonalną złość, bo brzmi jak piosenka ukradziona od Florence Welch, „Halo” rozpoczyna się iście Lana del Rey-owym wersem („Get up, let’s go for a ride” – no przepraszam, ale skisłam trochę)… Gdzieś jeszcze po drodze przyszły mi do głowy porównania z Phoebe Bridgers i Aurorą – choć to ostatnie to prawdę mówiąc tylko niuans kilku wokaliz.

Ten szereg porównań wskazuje na zupełnie odmienny kierunek niż wcześniejsze nazwiska, które bym łączyła z Wolfe (Darkher, Frayle, A. A. Williams, nawet King Woman). Ale równocześnie zarysowuje on inny problem. Co bym nie myślała o takich płytach jak Pain Is Beauty czy Abyss, to jedno jest pewne – nigdy w życiu nie miałam poczucia, że Wolfe od kogoś zrzyna. Wręcz przeciwnie, tak jak napisałam wcześniej, to inni zrzynali od niej! A tutaj nagle po raz pierwszy mam poczucie, że to Chelsea inspiruje się innymi osobami.[...]
