I gave them food but they are scared of it.
I will post a census of the dueling queens later and we will see who is ahead now that the pavement ant queen’s brood has “popped”
They all came to life in a one hour stretch at the same time! Suddenly there is so much movement in the tube. They are so tiny it makes my heart ache.

My Tetramorium immigrans (pavement ant) queen has made excellent progress. Her larvae are now pupae. (you can tell because they are now ant-shaped with legs) immigrans does not spin silk cocoons as my carpenter ants do. The queen keeps them clean and safe as they develop— she is their cocoon.(look at the second photo to see the progress she has made in just one week)

Ant update. The young carpenter colony has 10 workers and more on the way.
The pavement ant queen has *so many* eggs. Ma’am? That’s too many eggs. How did you make all of those without eating? #antqueen #tetramoriumimmigrans #camponotus

Remarkable. The ants in their combat behaviour actively realise set-theoretical counting principles, and by doing that, they realise a strategy that is mutually advantageous for both colonies and thus beneficial for the species. Brilliant & enchanting.
I was gloomy a moment ago, but having seen your post I am all cheered up! :-) Whatever else happens, something is deeply right with the world if deep mathematical structures emerge from ant behaviour!
Your beautiful account is the most Mastodonian of all Mastodon accounts. Tooting for enlightenment and joy. Thank you.
