Mrs. Smith and I set out recently to see if we could spot the legendary sandhill cranes that stop by south of here in the spring. Weโd heard some 20,000 have been known to hang out in Delta County, Colorado, on their annual migration. Thatโs more than enough to bring flocks of tourists to Eckert Crane Days each March to watch the big birds โrest, feed, dance and prepare for the next leg of their northerly migration.โ
We knew weโd missed the two official event days but hoped enough cranes would still be hanging around at Fruitgrowers Reservoir to make for some nice nature photos.
We saw two of them.
Obviously we were disappointed, and those two were out of range of my camera, so no pictures. I read somewhere that a few thousand had been there for Crane Days, but far fewer than previous years.
โโฆ studies have found that many bird species are adapting to climate change by migrating earlierโ
Coincidentally, soon after our belated adventure, High Country News published this article. In part, it says โโฆ studies have found that many bird species are adapting to climate change by migrating earlierโ but they might not be starting early enough to keep up with the pace of climate change.
I canโt help but wonder if thereโs a connection.
Just yesterday, again coincidentally, I attended an online discussion as a new member of the Citizensโ Climate Lobby, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that advocates for the adoption of effective climate policy. A presenter posed a question about what comes to mind when we think about what our world might be like in the not-too-distant future, about our concerns.
Many people expressed concerns about their children and grandchildren. Theyโre at the top of my list, too. The question also made me think about things I enjoy doing, and how a hotter atmosphere and more devastating wildfires might affect outdoor recreation and tourism and the people whose jobs depend on those activities.
Mrs. Smith and I love hiking and bicycling and exploring places we havenโt been before. I like fishing. We would both like to see sandhill cranes migrating and stopping nearby so we can watch them.
What about you?
B.J.
