Edward Smith Deevey Jr. (3 December 1914 – 29 November 1988), born in #AlbanyNewYork, was a prominent American #ecologist and #paleolimnologist, and an early protégé of #GEvelynHutchinson at #YaleUniversity. He was a creative pioneer in several areas, including quantitative #palynology, cycling of natural #isotopes, #biogeochemistry, #populationDynamics, #systematics and #ecology of freshwater #zooplankton, and he promoted the use of life tables in ecology. In 1938.

Hou et al. explore the potential role of cytoplasmic #genomes in #grape domestication, offering new insights into grape #evolution and #crop improvement.

I fell that at #BlueSky there is more engagement between scientists and other people.

And is not that I don't follow tags about #Biology, #Biogeography, #Systematics, #PlantEcology, #Biogeography or #Taxonomy. I do, but the volume of Linux and programming things overwhelms them.

But is not like I don't like Mastodon. I love it. But is funny that (for me) there is this clearly defined boundary: #Mastodon for computer things, #BlueSky for science things.

New species concept just dropped ... no, wait, it actually seems useful. Wayne Maddison & Jeannette Whitton published in @SystBiol's #DiamondOA BSSB so it's free to read and free to authors. Even if the concept itself doesn't take off, I think lots of lectures are going to use the figures and ideas.

In November, Ralf Werneburg and Jörg Schneider published a new genus and species of notostracan-like crustacean from the late Carboniferous of Germany: Thuringiops nephroides. They rightfully assessed that it probably belongs somewhere on the stem to the kazacharthran lineage (the monophyly of that is another issue entirely). #crustacea #arthropoda #branchiopoda #notostraca #paleontology #palaeontology #newspecies #systematics #germany #carboniferous
