  15. Argon #atoms make up ~1% of our atmosphere and undergo almost no chemical reactions. They basically float around indefinitely. In 1967 Harlow Shapley noted that their permanence means we all literally share breath and have shared it with every human ever alive.

    Argon-36 is the most common argon isotope in the universe. It’s often produced by stellar nucleosynthesis in #supernovas. In fact it was the first noble-gas #molecule detected in #space.

La teoría nos decía que estas forman una enana blanca que luego explota en un tercer tipo de supernova, la 'supernova por captura de electrones'. Pero recién la semana pasada se pudo confirmar que la supernova SN 2018zd, descubierta por un astrónomo aficionado en 2018, es un ejemplo de este tercer tipo.

    Cabe aclarar que, si bien es la primera confirmada, puede no haber sido la primera observada: se cree que la supernova SN1054, observada hace casi mil años por astrónomos árabes y chinos, puede haber sido de este tipo. Esta supernova dio origen a la bellísima 'nebulosa del cangrejo', donde los restos de una estrella muerta reencarnan en la semilla de nuevos sistemas planetarios.
