The initiative had been secretly funded by US tech entrepreneur Andrew Conru until he was contacted for comment on the reporting, and Aporia’s editors are connected to far-right extremists, including Erik Ahrens, whom German authorities have designated a “rightwing extremist” posing an “extremely high” danger.
The investigation also found that Aporia was owned by the Human Diversity Foundation, a Wyoming LLC founded in 2022 by Emil Kirkegaard, a Danish self-described eugenicist and race scientist who has spent years attempting to access genetic datasets, and maintaining publishing platforms including OpenPsych and Mankind Quarterly that serve a network of race-science researchers."
As one of Pinker's many longtime critics in left wing discourse, part of the reason I'm sharing this story is a giant middle finger to all the "Very Serious People TM" in our society who kept insisting it was unreasonable to say that vapid fraud was promoting a foundationally colonialist, white supremacist view of society, human development, and the world at large; we told you folks he was basically Niall Ferguson for "centrists" and this is absolutely where Pinker's career was always headed. Yet another celebrity intellectual who barfs up platitudes about the status quo that affluent white Americans love, turns out to be not just "asking questions" but the full blown cracker supremacist scholars on the left warned you he was. Maybe the gatekeepers of our larger discourse should stop showering praise on folks who kiss the ruling class's asses if they also think Charles Murray had some valid ideas worth exploring? Who can say.

@gimulnautti don't worry, i've been reading a lot of #RichardDawkins and #SamHarris and they've convinced me that Europe, due its superior moral culture and the influence of Christianity, has turned a corner and will not descend into barbarism again. Natural History of #Ashkenazi Intelligence (NHAI) is a paper published by "human biodiversity" proponent Gregory Cochran, anthropology student Jason Hardy and white nationalist Henry Harpending which "elaborates the hypothesis that the unique demography and sociology of Ashkenazim in medieval Europe selected for intelligence." It appears to be an hereditarian attempt to find "scientific" evidence for racist beliefs about race and intelligence. The paper was published in 2006 in the Cambridge University Press' Journal of Biosocial Science. The journal had been renamed from The Eugenics Review in 1969 at the time that Cambridge University Press began publishing the journal.
NHAI presents an untested and unproven hypothesis, which was nevertheless promoted by mainstream media, via proponents of hereditarianism, especially New York Times columnist Nicholas Wade and Harvard professor Steven Pinker.

I'm finding it holds up well.
That's actually an argument against another form of idiocy: panglossianism, particularly of the Steven Pinker variety. But the underlying mechanism is more or less the same: getting confounded with exhibited probabilities (nil, in the case of CGRs Not Yet Realised), or potential impacts (infinite, in the case of GCRs generally), and failing to consider other dimensions of the question:
- Chains of causality in arriving at some specific risk.
- Scope over which a given risk is "existential". (The "existence of what exactly?" question.)
- Potential exogenous bounds on growth, capacity, and/or attainment regardless of the risks in question.
If humans are bad at addressing risk generally, we are globally, catastrophically, existentally BAD at dealing with global catastrophic and/or existential risks.
