Justice, Faith, and Brotherhood: Reflections on Rawls, Christianity, Freemasonry, and Modern Politics
After writing my previous reflection on John Rawls and his idea of justice behind a “veil of ignorance,” I found myself continuing to sit with the question of fairness in society. Not just as a philosophical exercise, but as something deeply personal. Over time, that question does not stay in the classroom. It moves into how we see the world, how we interpret faith, how we understand brotherhood, and even how we engage with modern political movements. As a Christian, and someone who […] -

#Liberalism, whatever you think of it, has shaped the Western world and is under attack right now. The #Economist has well-written a #History of liberalism. Worthwhile reading…

"Inalienable Rights: Part I The Basic Argument" - the #liberal theory that both Nozick and #Rawls missed
https://www.ellerman.org/inalienable-rights-part-i-the-basic-argument/
"An inalienable right is a right that may not be ceded or transferred away even with the consent of the holders of the right. Any contract to alienate such a right would be an inherently invalid contract, and, vice-versa, a right such that any contract to alienate it was inherently invalid would thus be an inalienable right."

Reading about [Rawl's Difference Principle](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Theory_of_Justice#The_difference_principle) after seeing it referenced by a mythical gold-hoarding dragon. https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMrRhUtdL/
In essence, all the rules of society we could choose will benefit some more than others. It is both unavoidable and random as to who benefits. All accidents of birth. So the best rules to choose are those that benefit the least of us the most.

"Warum Marxisten John #Rawls lesen sollten"
"Die analytische #Philosophie wird von Dogmatikern gerne als bürgerliche Theorie abgetan. Der analytische #Marxismus hat sich diesen Ansatz hingegen zunutze gemacht, um eine klarsichtige und rigorose Kritik des #Kapitalismus zu entwickeln."

This is one of my favourite passages from #Rawls (it appears in his Justice as Fairness: A Restatement). I like it because it changes so thoroughly how we should conceive of Rawls' place in political philosophy, a place that (I believe) many social-liberals may find uncomfortable. Rawls here positions himself as a right-Hegelian, similarly to Francis Fukuyama -
New important paper by Catherine Audard (London School of Economics):
"Addressing the rise of inequalities: How relevant is Rawls's critique of welfare state capitalism?"
Open access: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/josp.12517
Catherine Audard examines John Rawls's critique of "welfare state capitalism" and of its inability to fight structural injustices together with his proposal for "property-owning democracy" as a realistic prospect and a credible alternative.

Underrated Reddit interaction: I've been enjoying #DragonPrince on #Netflix with the kids, and was amused by the scene in Series 2 where the king explains his theory of governing, which happens to be a direct lift of #Rawls 's veil of ignorance. Someone on Reddit also noticed this 4 years ago https://www.reddit.com/r/TheDragonPrince/comments/aupm6i/a_theory_of_justice_by_john_rawls_in_dragon_prince/ ... and the first comment is the showrunner replying to say they studied philosophy under Rawls!

On #Meritocracy As A Theory Of #DistributiveJustice
https://3quarksdaily.com/3quarksdaily/2023/03/on-meritocracy-as-a-theory-of-distributive-justice.htmlThe “playing field” isn’t level, there is an oversupply of talent and the methods for determining #merit are often winner-take-all, the social determinants of merit often don’t line up with objective criteria of merit; and the methods for determining merit aren’t robustly sensitive to desert.

Just tried to convince my wife of a Rawlsian maximin principle for what temperature we should keep the house—i.e., it should be set for the comfort of the least warm. She didn’t buy it. #philosophy @philosophy #Rawls

I'm taking a #ComputerHumanInteraction course at my college and the acronym in #Portuguese is IHC. This already striked me as a bit too #religious since IHC was commonly used in the #MiddleAges to refer to ΙΗΣΟΥΣ (Jesus).
And a few days ago I get another funny coincidence as our professor asked us to read a text about #HCI ethics [1] that begins by talking about #Christian #ethics. It then goes on to talk about #Rawls, #Utilitarianism and #TechnoLibertanism.

John Rawls died 20 years ago today. In this interview from 1991 he speaks about his career, the historical context of his "A Theory of Justice", the role of philosophy - and its limitations:
