Let’s face it, we know next to nothing about #AUKUS Tier One, and the little we know we garner from US and UK sources where the *paranoia* surrounding secret and top secret briefings isn’t as ingrained as it is at home — there are historical precedents behind this behaviour which can be teased out of the history of the UKUSA agreement). Hence much of what is written domestically in the press and open to the public about AUKUS is little better than hypothetical commentary (neither confirmed nor denied by govt or #RichardMarlesMP). Some commentary is a little better in that the guesses postulated therein have a grain of *probabilty* based on *educated guesses*. But they are few and sparse in details. That is the state of play where AUKUS is concerned and very unlikey to change in the future.Moreover, where more knowledgeable sources are commenting, they do so with an agenda, but their comments reflects their limited knowledge beyond broad issues, or are unable to be more specific due to the Official Secrets Act. Either way, what is available to the public, journalist and politically active commentators is next to nothing in the face of the most complex Defence procurement in the history of the ADF.
Dear Eddy, I’ve written the above to keep my comment short by not addressing all of your talking points that I take issue with. Tbf, my 23 years in Defence does not make me an expert, but it ought to count for something in the public arena. Given my views above, I sympathise with commentators and journalists who feel obliged, and rightly so, to keep the AUKUS issue alive hoping for transparency and accountability by maintaining the *heat* in this public debate. It’s a healthy thing.

Here we go again…Allan Behm (writing for the Australian Institute) serves up another word salad and take pockshots at… Australia’s adherence to the NPT via… well, everything submarine and US alliance with a limp lettuce. Or is it a swipe at Senator #Conroy ‘s interview performance on 7:30? You tell me, I couldn’t decide which.
I might also note that the Virginia boats to be sold to Australia are capable of launching US Cruise missiles (Tomahawk and its latest nuclear capable incarnation) via torpoedo tubes (simple google search will reveal that much). Hence, so are current USN Virginia boats not just the new ones to be built — that makes the USN SSGN rotations in HMAS Stearling in 2032 the author references here irrelevent — we’d be hosting potentially nuclear armed SSN (from the US and potentially the UK) well before then… might already have.
My opinion of the author’s writing craft is decidedly going on a slide into the bin. Read him if you must, just keep your wits about you and read him very carefully and have a think about it.
Just in case my writing here attracts critical comments, in my defence, this is a toot, not an analysis, nor anything I’d consider ready for publication.

I have to say, I’m not a fan of Allan Behm (now with The Australian Institute) because, in this short article at least, he makes assertions that are light on defense and imply assumptions that are not divulged. In this case it is about #AUKUS of course, if a horse may be beaten to death, this one is surpisingly resilient.
“So, we are now left with huge investments focused on a single capability, without any consideration of the suite of capabilities Australia needs for its defence, and where just one of those capabilities — submarines — fits in.”
There are so many things wrong with the quoted segment above. I will only address the most important of these. There are valid strategic and tactical requirements for the RAN to field submarines. These were first identified after #Federation (our first subs arrived from the UK in 1914 and were deployed to our North against the German navy). and while a lot has changed since, the basic requirements were never made redundent given there have been many successful submarine procurements and deployments since WW One. So let no one question where these boats will ‘fit in’ lest it demonstrates an anomalous understanding of the matter (its kinder than saying erroneous). And Behm should know better if his resumé is any guide. There are a lot of thing to look at in this AUKUS Tier One *Deal* and much of it rightly ought to be brought to light and publically discussed, but whether Australia needs submarines or not is not one of them.

I’ve said it before and I’m saying it again. I will always support ADF members in their requirements for the best platforms and weapon systems in order to give them the best odds of successfully carrying the tasks assigned to them by the govt of the day. And for submariners this is especially important.

The Department of #HomelandSecurity (#DHS ) plans to pay data broker giant Thomson #Reuters $125 million for access to its databases of personal data — which includes peoples’ names, addresses, #SocialSecurity numbers, ethnicity, #socialmedia posts, and #geolocation information — to help #Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) investigate what it describes as “voters fraud” and immigration fraud, according to procurement documents reviewed by 404 Media. The document says Thomson Reuters is able to let ICE continuously monitor millions of people and entities of interest.

Among the latest data-breach villains: the Washington Post
Members of the Washington Post’s extended diaspora, meaning both former employees as well as past freelancers, have begun getting an unwelcome reminder of that chapter in their professional lives: a letter from the Post, sent from an address not in the District but in West Sacramento, Calif., informing them of a “Data Security Incident.”
That inefficient phrase is defensive legalese for “data breach,” which the letter says, in comparably defensive passive voice, happened between July 10 and Aug. 22, 2025, when “certain data was accessed and acquired without authorization” from unspecified Oracle E-Business Suite applications.
In my case and others, to judge from reports from fellow recipients of this joyless notice, the “certain data” included names and Social Security numbers.
The letter may not spark any more joy at Oracle, since it describes the vulnerability exploited as a “previously unknown and widespread” flaw. Oracle’s own warning red-flags it as “remotely exploitable without authentication.” But the paper’s disclosure does not address another cause of the data breach: how the Post chose to retain this sort of sensitive data long after it should have stopped being regularly business-relevant.
Consider my example: The last time I had any ongoing transactions with the Post that should have involved my SSN was 15 years ago. I rolled over my 401(K) after leaving the paper, and Jeff Bezos buying the Post in 2013 resulted in the company transferring my pension and those of other ex-Posties to former publisher Don Graham’s firm Graham Holdings.
For the handful of freelance pieces I’ve sold to my old shop since then (such as the Jan. 28, 2019 opinion piece headlined “Big tech firms still don’t care about your privacy”), I’ve used the Employer Identification Number I obtained shortly after I started freelancing.
Yet apparently my SSN was still sitting unencrypted in a network-accessible database last summer, contrary to basic security advice, along with the digits of thousands of other current and former Post employees and contractors. Some had banking details compromised too.
That’s “thousands” as in 9,720 people, per a filing the Post made with Maine’s Attorney General in November that a few security publications covered at the time. A month later, a former Post employee named Jun Hee Kim filed a class-action lawsuit against the Post on behalf of those nearly 10,000 individuals.
I have yet to get a notice inviting me to join that class, and the Post’s letter does not mention the litigation. Instead, it offers the usual paltry remedy of a year of identity-theft monitoring, in this case from a firm called IDX.
I know that’s the standard act of apology not only from covering data breaches but from having my data exposed in them, over and over. I know the drill well enough to have turned “Equifax” into the verb “Equifaxed” and to have frozen my credit more than once.
So at some level, I’m not surprised at the news of the Post’s data breach so much as I’m surprised that it took this long. Throughout my time working at 15th and L, I saw the Post treat SSNs as carelessly as anybody else did decades ago–even using them as employee IDs, as seen in some of my own admin paperwork from early in this century showing the full nine digits. But it’s still stupid and sloppy that this particular data breach happened not in 2005 or 2015 but in 2025, well past the point when management at the Post should have known better.

It seems to me that after all the angst I’ve seen here against the #AUKUS deal and especially against #TierOne and the #SSN plans, none of these anti-AUKUS tooters have commented/?read? my 4 part toot full of details about the collaboration history of #UK #US SSNs as well as their nuclear #reactors or even read the expert opinion offering a #PlanB I also tooted recently.
Shows you that anger needs very little to feed on while closing the open mind to more clarity and more details on the object of its obsession. No pointing fingers here, it’s just an observation.

This is an interesting article regarding #AUKUS and a #PlanB (should there be one) by an expert in submarines (see article for details). The author makes a case for returning to the French to build the Australia #SSN on the basis that the #K15 reactor used in the #French construction uses Low Enriched Uranium (#LEU) the kind that is use in civilian nuclear industry. And there is a lot to be said for the idea (worth the read).

We need to understand, from a military strategic and tactical perspective, what *Deterrence* means before we get into a discussion about protecting sea lanes. The best historical example I can come up with is the German Uboat threat in the Atlantic in both WW. The Wolf pack might have been small, but their threat was Ocean wide. One can speculate a more dire outcome in WW2 had that wolfpack grown to the size the German Admirals had unsuccessfully asked for. One might also remember that that German sea lane interdiction might have been more effective had the UK not broken the Enigma code.
As far as the sovereignty and kill switch postulates, I can only reply that my security level doesn’t allow me to know one way or the other, so any comment from me would be pure speculation and unworthy of discussion at this level.
For the record, imo, the PRC Navy is still in dippers.

In return #DJT ordered the blockade of all Iranian ports by #USN and #USAF.If tomorrow Australia were to face a similar fate, where a country X were to blockade Australia's ports, Australia is an island after all, then the best counter would be for Australia to do a reverse blockade. That is where #SSN come into play. Also #SSN along with drones would be the best way to break the blockade.

If I haven’t made it plain before, I have certainly left enough clues in the past as to what ought to be discussed about #AUKUS and what ought best be left for those with the appropriate expertise to deliberate and inform.
Clearly, the main public gripe about #ScottyFromMarketing ‘s big dirty deal concerns costs. Any discussion of our reliance on the #US #Alliance (a secondary gripe) needs not be conducted solely from the AUKUS perspective because it is not the wherewithal of that alliance.
But to be more specific, AUKUS must be evaluated from the perspective of stated core requirements addressing the latest Strategic Review and the military tasks/missions which fall out of it.
If the public needs/wishes to debate our defence spending and access to classified documents on the matter is not possible, it must fall back to critique the strategic review itself, the steering document for every Defence acquisition. Everything about defence emanates from that document.
Ergo, IMO, the current community enquiry is wasting its time if it reviews anything else but the source of all defence requirements as it lacks expertise (and time) to deal with the work that eventually lead to submarine warfare scenarios and the evalluation of platform Vs requirements before any discussion can focus on the AUKUS deal. Focusing on AUKUS is like talking about the water coming out of the tap as the source of all its contaminents.
And this is why, having tuned to the enquiry just now, I quickly stopped watching it. What is it really trying to achieve? I found it a useless waste of time…and a political stunt at best. It will not inform the public. It will sow confusion as petty interests are platformed. It will generalise a mountain of processes and deduce nothing useful from it. It will further divide public opinion on AUKUS, claim success on the back of emotive reactions to biased platforming and stoke further clueless Column inches.
I sincerely hope that I am wrong about this, truly, I am. But the odds are stacked up against it.
Think about it… #Marles is fully briefed on AUKUS, but what we publically hear from the Minister is spin, platitudes, obfuscation and misdirection when he tells us anything about the SSN deal. He is not a complete idiot. He does this for a reason. Ask yourself then, what is the reason(s) which compel a sitting Minister to gamble his political career on remaing tight lipped about that particular defence acquisition?

I cannot help but sigh deeply whenever politicians get involved in strategic military discussions. This is in no way to disparage, in this case, Senator #Shoebridge as he rightly points out that a handful of submarines will not guarantee open sea lanes to Australia in the event of war. For what it’s worth, Sen Shoebridge is only targeting the Govt’s goto spiel about #AUKUS, that is a simple message which the public can understand and focus on.
While the govt messaging about protecting sealanes being the reason for SSN acquisition is not entirely wrong, it is not entirely correct either. Submarines platforms are primarily intelligence, insertion, and deterence platforms, #Stealth is something SSN currently have in spades. Their stealth characteristics make these SNNs a force projection multiplier in any theater of sea warfare and likely to make an aggressor think twice before they commit to offensive actions. This comment is not a defence of #AUKUS since that is simply a defence acquisition project. But it is in defence of the need for undersea platforms that are stealthy, highly survivable, can transport personel, equipment and stores, carry offensive and defensive elements and traverse transoceanic distances at speed without refueling. Those needs are dictated to the ADF by the govt of the day in terms of assigned strategic missions and outcomes. In short, our ADF (men adn women pledging their lives to defend us all) deserves the very best materiel and platforms we can provide in order to carry out those missions and responsibilites entrusted to our them.
Everything else is plainly just politics, played by, I dare say, less than genuine and knowledgeable individuals.

A weird text from my dad in February sent me on a months-long quest to solve a mystery that has been troubling an odd group of victims from a #ColumbiaUniversity data breach last year. That group? People with absolutely no connection to the school.
The text included a photo of a letter from #Columbia , informing me that I was a victim of a data breach last June, one that exposed a wide range of sensitive information, including 1.8 million #SocialSecurity numbers.

Apparently, social security numbers in the US were used as student identifiers in SAT exams in the past, and widely shared with universities.
It's absolutely puzzling how the supposedly sensitive #SSN (that can't be changed) is used for virtually everything in the US - you can't even get an offer from an internet provider without disclosing yours.
And in case it leaks, you get 2 years of free credit monitoring, making it *your* responsibility to make sure that you don't become a victim of identity theft.
