Yesterday I spent an entertaining hour being guest of a podcast, discussing the connections between theoretical astrophysics, its complex relation with numerics when applied to electromagnetism, and the deep mysteries both can unveil in high redshift observations, also considering the latest JWST disc..
Just kidding!
It was all about "do we live in a simulation?" which seems to be the most important question of the moment and the zeitgeist. 🙄

Recently there was this Commentary about my humble attempt to refute the #SimulationHypothesis using physics:

I don't take issue with that and it's a fair paper, although we are clearly debating different things.
Anyway, I took a look the profiles of the two authors:
1. "Philosophy, simulation theory, Bitcoin, and Panarchy."

Just saying, I am happy I wrote my paper.

here is the joy of rock solid #electromagnetism, which induces parcels of iron to bounce on a plate and align according to the magnetic field lines of two magnets put just below the plate (in todays EM class)

There is a clash of scholar cultures here, which is fair. I tested the versions of the #SimulationHypothesis (SH) that can be tested using physics, as clearly explained in the article (and my last commenters get it), as in the "Matrix" scenario. Solipsistic version of the SH cannot be tested, at least I could not figure out how, nor versions in which the simulation happens in entirely different universes, and this is discussed too (and my commenters get it too).

Some seemingly sophisticated argument for the #SimulationHypothesis by "techbros" (Musk being the most eminent one) use this basic logic :
"in the past we moved at the speed of a few km/h, then we invented cars and reached 100km/h, than airplanes and we reached 1000km/h...even with the smallest rate of progress, it is unavoidable that in the future we will exceed even speed of light! Just deal with it"
...similar fallacy arguing for this reality being a simulation.

Do we live in a simulation? -> NO, I think we can prove we cannot be in a "Matrix" scenario of being simulated by future descendants in this Universe.

2/3…one can arguably construct a limited local model and make observations that look null. #SimulationHypothesis fans would call that cheating. Maybe some future idea will mark progress but lack of falsifiability sometimes flags arbitrary or unnecessary levels of abstraction. Still, #Gedankan need room to roam. We should not , as Avi Loeb likes to say, pretend we know everything.
