I never would've expected "Neo" as an #Apple product name but #MacBookNeo is looking like it's set to be a market share disruptor. Without any student discount, without any #Shopee sales and whatnot, the Neo's just 2499 MYR lol. That's fucking ridiculous, when #Windows laptops with half the capability and a quarter of the build quality would at least cost 3-3.5k MYR.
I still think the #MacBookAir is better value if you could afford it (hard not to, when ~1-3 gen older Airs go for 3k or less brand new, pretty often), but, these Neos are such a sweet deal if u tryna save a lil bit more money or buy in bulk or something for schools/offices. As the tech guy of my family and friends, this laptop is such an easy recommend (assuming that I deem them able to work around #macOS 's weird quirks).
Notable specs:
- A18 Pro #ARM chip (what a flex, same chip as the #iPhone 16 Pro and it's more capable than Apple's M1)
- 8GB RAM (expected, since other Macs have been upgraded to min of 16GB for a while now - and perfectly sufficient on macOS)
- 256GB SSD (not a lot but it's never not been enough on my own Macs even as a dev)
- 1080p webcam
- WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 6
The only downsides:
- Instead of #Thunderbolt/#USB4 ports, it only has 1x USB-3 (charging, data, #DisplayPort) and 1x USB-2 port (charging, data) - this is a slight bummer and USB-2 in this day and age on a laptop is a little weird and confusing, should've both been USB-3, but at least its USB-3 port is capable of DP
- No #TouchID unless you get the 512GB SSD model - prolly not a big deal
- Keyboard isn't backlit I believe, but yea not something I've ever used
- NOT a haptic trackpad u might be familiar with on other MacBooks - prolly the biggest deal to me, but to some reviewers who've tested it out, it's not functionally different?

Estou aproveitando muito bem meu recesso longe do meu irmão (que consegue cansar minha cabeça muito mais que meu trabalho), mas alguma motivação pra voltar pra casa eu tenho.

both of these issues were pertaining to their #Apple Watch charger btw. the first one, was their 2-in-1 USB-C to USB-C + #AppleWatch charger. That worked fine, 'cept the USB-C charger does not seem to charge 2 different #iPhone 15 Pros - despite it charging other USB-C devices fine, AND its advertised data sync capability's completely false.
After returning that, I bought their standalone Apple Watch charger which came with both Lightning and USB-C ports. It charged 2 of my Apple Watches just fine initially, but by the 3rd Apple Watch I was attempting to charge, both ports stopped working and it gave off a burning smell.
So, yea, nah. Another off-brand Apple Watch charger I bought the same week also went extremely hot the moment I tried to charge a watch so I immediately returned that too. The only non-Apple Apple Watch charger I've bought was a #UGREEN one and that was perfect, expectedly since it was #MFI certified. The only issue with UGREEN's watch charger is that they don't sell it as a cable but rather as a 'USB stick'.
SO. Lesson of the story: buy MFI-certified Apple Watch chargers. Luckily for me, #Shopee 's return process is a freaking breeze - I clicked a button, filled in the return form, and arranged a pickup for tomorrow where their driver will come and take the parcel back from me, and have my refund approved the same day. Even then, just not worth the hassle. Fuck #Mcdodo (what a name, these brands). -

I bought a #Belkin USB-C hub, that is functionally/spec-wise the same with my existing #UGreen hub, but for 3x the price. I only did so bcos it had all its ports on one side, while the UGreen has em split on both sides - seems stupid enough a reason, but that's pretty nice if you wish to 3D print a dock for the #SteamDeck or something like that and have the hub just slide in, with all of its ports accessible.
Anyway, when I received it, I was a lil off-put to discover that the permanently attached cable coming off of the hub is made of silicone, which is extremely fragile and prone to tearing, rather than something more durable and hardy like a braided cable - the UGreen one I had was braided and has lasted me over 2 years and it still looks as flawless as when it arrived, meanwhile the new Belkin one arrived already with a bulge on the cable due to stress.
Fortunately, the shop was kind enough to let me return it for a refund. Normally, doing this through #Shopee, I'd get a free return label where I can drop it off at my local J&T, but that's no longer an option - they only work with #Poslaju, #FlashExpress, and Shopee's own #SPX. I was pleasantly surprised tho that you don't even need to drop them off yourself now, since there's also an option for Shopee to pick it up for you for free - so I chose that. Pretty cool, but honestly very doable considering how these Shopee delivery folks are always coming to these neighbourhoods daily anyway to deliver packages - it wouldn't be hard to arrange for them to pickup a returning parcel as well. -
Is there an #Apple/#MFI certified USB-C to Lightning (or the other way around) adapter? Ideally usable for both charging and data transfer.
The only one I could find is this from #BOUTOP (never heard of em before), but they're only on #Amazon lol so the shipping cost is a lot more than the actual cost of the adapter. Not that bad of a price tho, ~RM50 total for 2.
That being said, even this MFI certified one does not support data transfer, only charging. The goal is so that I could bring a single USB-C cable, and still be able to use it for older iPhones or Lightning devices.
---
Update: Ok, supposedly, according to reviews I'm seeing on the listing as well as a separate listing elsewhere - it might actually support data transfer?
Just heavily advertised as, not, to deter people from thinking it could do things a regular USB-C to Lightning cable couldn't like for OTG, headphones, etc.
Anyway, ordered em since I'm not even sure an alternative that is MFI-certified exists. The price, honestly isn't that bad either - even with the pricey shipping. For 2, it's ~RM50 bucks. A non-MFI certified one I found on #Shopee from China/Malaysia is like ~RM30 a piece, before shipping (tho shipping's always free, so). -
#Shopee Express ( #SPX ) logistics really doesn't make sense. - store 20 km North of me - Hub SOC 6 (near the seller) - Sorting facility at SOC 5 (Laguna, 25 km South of my location) - Delivery hub: Arnaiz (no idea where) - Delivery hub: Escoda (6 km North my loc) Seriously? 🤣 #Philippines

It’s so annoying that I can’t download the Shopee app on my iPhone using the US App Store. I can get the Thailand version of the app, but because of this, I just use lazada.
I wish I could use shopee as the shopee delivery people at my building at really nice and are really helpful.

In other interesting, random news, Linus from #LTT/#LMG apparently went on vacation to Bali in Indonesia, Port Dickson (somehow...?) and KL in Malaysia, and Singapore (of which he had to double check to see if it was considered a country despite having been there before, again, somehow lol).
What I found random was that apparently he walked to (Plaza) Low Yat on his first day in KL just to get a micro HDMI cable, and found the tech mall fascinating enough to come again the next day to shoot a video, despite being on family vacation and not work. One (camera) shop tried to charge him a "white guy" tax of 40 USD for a fucking cable, but fortunately he refused it ofc and went to other way better stores.
As someone who frequented Low Yat a lot right up until college (until #Lazada and #Shopee came and dominated that is), I knew the perfect place for him to get what he was looking for was Viewnet, and from the pic he showed, I'm pretty sure that was where he ended up. He also noted how it's bizarre how seemingly all stores in Low Yat, big and small, had plenty of 50-series #NVIDIA cards and 9000-series #AMD cards available, tho I'm not surprised cos most everybody here wouldn't even be able to afford them or even need them - the demographic here mostly only play dumbass online MOBAs and shooters anyway lol.
Anyway, interesting to see a tourist, tech-savvy perspective on Low Yat - which was at some point, a super cool place for me too and where the best deals were to be had (for tech)... but, again, that's changed significantly when we have Shopee and whatnot which offers way better deals for the same products, sometimes from even the same stores you find in Low Yat. Back then, I had to go store-to-store there and get their latest, updated price sheet/catalog listing the prices of everything they sell incl. PC components and I'd compare them before tracing back to which store that sells each component I needed for the cheapest. Now, you do the same, online on Shopee, use all the vouchers thrown at you for free daily, and buy them right from your seat without leaving your house.

If you're looking for a good #MiniPC in the Philippines, you'll likely find better deals at #Datablitz: https://ecommerce.datablitz.com.ph/collections/pc-mac?pf_t_categories=Mini-PC. They offer competitive prices and a trusted online merchant. While their selection may be limited, their prices are often more affordable compared to that from #Lazada or #Shopee.
