Decided to begin watching Adam Curtis’s #Shifty documentary series on #BBC iPlayer tonight. It was highlighted as one of the best documentaries of 2025.
It’s made up of archive footage from #Thatcher coming to power and the immediate time afterwards.
As someone born in the Winter of Discontent I wanted to understand the time when I was alive before I could remember.
I now know my childhood suspicion and dislike of Thatcher was rooted in her economic incompetence and hatred of working class.

It's absolutely fascinating looking back on 50 years of craven political dysfunction and social upheaval in the UK.
I had forgotten about Northern Ireland and the violence, the bombings, the hatred. I had forgotten the devastating self inflicted unemployment that savaged generations, young and old. Living through that history you don't properly see all the pieces, you can't see the forest for the trees. This was before the internet. You didn't get a birds eye view of what's happening, not in the way we see the big picture in America right now.
And I'm watching this doco and thinking, far out this was so fkd up. Things were way worse than I realised at the time.
And in a very strange way, it gives me hope for the USA. That things can change. That a course can be corrected. At least to some extent anyway. I mean the whole Brexit debacle is a whole other chapter. There are multitudes of ways to steer a country into an iceberg.
But just the idea that it's possible to imagine a different future, that is so very very important right now.

Like any Adam Curtis documentary it takes its time getting to the denouement. I do think it's interesting to counter-pose the willful surrender of control to financial markets depicted with the unwillingness to take advantage of the current political climate to reestablish that control for the betterment of everyone. I don't think that just applies to the UK incidentally.

Done! After more than two years, I finished #Shifty!
Still wondering if I should rip out the neck ribbing and remake it in blue instead purple.All in all it looks better than expected. I was never sure if I would like the finished sweater, it is very ... loud ... but I am pleasantly surprised.
Nevertheless, the fit is terrible. Wrong size, but also too many stitches over the chest / not enough stitches for the arms. I understand the pattern was altered for a better since I started. #knitting
