* Modern translations often say "One who learns from every person." from #PirkeiAvot on #Sefaria. https://www.sefaria.org/Pirkei_Avot.4?lang=bi

Not working means we can't be nearly as generous as we'd like with the causes we support. But I was pleased to make a small donation to #Sefaria this year. It is amazing how often I rely on that resource, and how valuable it's become to me. I wish I could do more.

Fin tioårsvideo för #Sefaria. Kolla gärna in projektet om ni inte känner till det. Har hjälpt mig helt otänkbart mycket både att studera och att undervisa. Jag gör alla mina kursmaterial där.

I'm staring at the Leningrad Codex in Sefaria for Gen 46:27. What is the character that I have highlighted? And what does it mean?

「If so, lamah zeh anochi? (translated on #Sefaria as: if so, why do I exist?) #Rivkah asks this when she feels the twins #Esau and #Jacob locked in a struggle in her womb. God answers "two nations are within you, and the older shall serve the younger.”
I keep asking myself: does God truly answer her? Is this all we're meant for in life? To witness the nations that struggle against one another? For one to always triumph over the other? To forget that every single one of us teems with life?
Rivkah's question points out that this struggle harms the very earth we walk on. It damages the hearts and minds of all who carry it.
She deserved a better answer, just like we deserve one now.
But when God is silent, it is the time to create one for ourselves.」

I got a letter!
#Sefaria, a digital library of Jewish literature, is celebrating its 10 year anniversary by letting folks claim a Hebrew letter from the Torah. I know very little about #Hebrew so why not learn about what the letter means, as well as what the word in the verse means. (1/5)

"There is basis for the gatekeeping impulse. There are different levels of knowledge of the texts and facility in reading them in their original language, and a respect for expertise and accomplishment and a distrust of ideas formulated on the basis of secondary sources seems to me to be basic to the idea of scholarship in general. But you risk the danger of building a fence so high no one can get over it..."

#Sefaria updated their iOS & iPadOS app and it is much better! Closer to the web experience (personally I almost exclusively use the app so this is a good thing for me). I’m not a power-user but the UX feels much better.

Something I will say is that I really like that #Sefaria provides Hebrew and English next to each other. It feels like they're symbolically telling you that you can check the text if you want. I feel like monolingual translations of Scripture are very much "you should take our word for it".

Have you heard about the amazing new Jewish texts available this year on Sefaria?

Was just about to open #Sefaria to look up some Torah texts.
Then decided that #NittelNacht isn't one of the customs I need to rebel against 😉 Torah study will wait.
A Git Nittel you all!
#Nittel Nacht is a traditional custom of some communities (who lived in Christian majority countries for 1,000+ years) - not to learn any sacred text on the eve of December 24th (and/or January 6th for those who lived in Eastern Christian countries).

Walking along the road one day, he saw a man planting a carob tree. He said, "In how many years will it bear fruit?" The man replied, "In seventy years." He said, "Is it so clear to you that you will live seventy years?" The man replied, "I found the world with carob trees. Just as my ancestors planted for me, I too am planting for my descendants."
