"Selichot. It is one of the most powerful nights on the #Jewish calendar, serving as a dress rehearsal for #YomHaDin, also known as #RoshHashanah, the day of judgment itself.

The ritual’s earliest source is an obscure #midrash, #TannaDVeiEliyahuZuta. In it, #KingDavid has a troubling premonition: the Temple will one day be destroyed, which he never had the chance to build, but he knows it will be built one day. Along with its destruction is the sacrificial system that atones for #Israel’s sins. So he asks G-d the obvious question: what happens to us then? How can we atone without the sacrifices?

G-d’s answer is the origin of #Selichot. When trouble comes, G-d tells David, let Israel stand before Me ba’agudat echad, as a single unit, and recite the words of forgiveness, and I will answer them. G-d, wrapped like a #sheliachtzibur, or prayer leader, descended to teach #Moses the order of the service."

Indeed. We are definitely dealing with a Venn diagram, but I would suggest that perverters ..of whatever the fairly dominant religion is..(imo most faiths that have evolved over long times have some value, at least as a handbook for being a human) are a significant factor in the minting on atheists.

I'm not sure where I read it, but I bought a book a while back where the introduction said something like 'if a man does not believe in God and keeps the throne empty that is a valuable friend indee'd and they might have been quoting the #midrash.

As a person on the other side of the fence that looks at it without judgment except how it affects me, I see two different types

We Christians memorize "In the beginning..." in Genesis.

But the rabbis say "Torah starts w/ beit (b) and not aleph (a). Why? Because beit starts berakhah (blessing), and aleph starts arur (cursed); Torah is given to us as a blessing, not a curse."

I'm falling in love with the Jewish way of reading the text.

There's a midrash that says that when God created Adam, the angels could not tell which one was God, as Adam was created in God's image and likeness. It wasn't until God put Adam to sleep that the angels could tell who was who.

This is the most lovely image.

I want to to push back on the idea that art and storytelling is only universal when it comes from the general (aka white Christian) culture. I’m a life-long fantasy nerd, but so much if it is based around Christian ideas around good and evil, the chosen one, and the hero’s journey. I’m bored and tired. I need the specificity of my own Jewish culture to create new types of shared mythos with different core values. Values that are hard to explain to non-Jews who see Judaism as “just” a religion.

I want to create spaces for *everyone* where we address complex, often contradictory challenges and needs of marginalized communities and humanity in general. And in the great tradition about both #TTRPGs and #Midrash, help build Kahal, the small village of our setting, and its hopefully many parallel universes. 🧵​3/6

I first heard this #Midrash from the late Nechama Leibowitz, Z"L in a class I took with her in the summer of 1995. It says the #Jews in the desert weren't able to drink the water in Marah because "כי מרים הם" wich is normally translated as, "because the waters were bitter". This Midrash reinterprets the words to mean, "Because the people were bitter". Out attitude colors the way we see the world in so many ways! #parsha #torah #mazeldon

This is an important and thoughtful discussion. To add a layer to it - note that the early quotes of Jesus himself in the #Gospels are different than how they're understood in the rest of the #NewTestament and #ChurchFathers.
Compare these "Pharisee" teachings (mainstream Rabbinic Judaism in the #Mishnah, #Midrash, and #Talmud) with Jesus's ideas - many are the same.

#Jesus may have been closer to Pharisee than to other groups of Jews at the time.
