Maybe I'm just a naive little 30-years-experience #software #engineer but given these two options to make a #search engine

1. Use the words the user typed to find pages that match.

2. Wholly discard the user input and instead develop mind-reading #code that is 30% successful at guessing what the user "meant".

I would take the FAR EASIER route and do number 1.

(That's also the only option that would work.)

Now I'm reminded that USB-C to mini-USB cables are in themselves pretty rary, and that at all the places that "list them" they are discontinued, and that SEARCH IS BROKEN because all the hits are for discontinued items.

I’ve heard people throw around the statistic that one GPT-powered search takes as much energy as 10 Google searches.

That sounds like an important data point, but here’s what I want to know: after I do that Google search, how much more energy is spent by my having to load a half-dozen SEO-placed, content-mill garbage articles, on pages bloated with adtech, trying to find one that has the actual piece of information I need on it?
