As we head into the final weekend of August with many families preparing for youngsters heading 'back-to-school', I think this year's summer break will live long in the memory.
In short, it's been a belter!
Captured this view of Cliffe Park, on Sunderland's coast in NE England at the beginning of the week, looking north towards Whitburn Bay and Souter Point beyond.
For anyone not local, the lighthouse in this picture was built in 1856 by Thomas Meik, the River Wear Commissioners' Engineer, and originally was located on the Old South Pier at the mouth of the River Wear.
It became redundant in later years and was relocated to its present position as a reminder of the city's maritime heritage, not to mention becoming an iconic seafront landmark.#england #sunderland #seaside #seaburn #coast #lighthouse #landscape #august #summer #photography

Best seat in the house – the theme of blue skies and warm sunshine continuing a weather pattern that began, appropriately enough, at the summer solstice last month.
The unusually prolonged warm spell is making the headlines almost daily in the UK and officially breaking records set as long ago as the summer of 1976.
Here, a group of Seaburn surf-watchers, pictured this afternoon on Sunderland's coastal promenade in NE England enjoying the seaside vibes.
Despite the fact that today's high tide peaked mid-afternoon, there was still plenty of sand to go round for those wanting to spend a summer's day at the seaside.#england #sunderland #seaside #seaburn #sunshine #summer #july #coast #people #photography

Summer by the sea – red valerian growing in the dunes on the seafront of my local stretch of coast at Seaburn, Sunderland in NE England as the season of spring gives way to summer.
Today, on 21 June, the summer solstice, the sun rises at 04.26 and sets at 21.47, making it the longest day of the year.
What's not to like, apart from the nights drawing in once again, although hopefully a while before we begin to notice it!#sunderland #seaburn #coast #seascape #summer #solstice #landscape #photography

Strands of Home
With a few days free between terms, I took a trip back to the homeland. To spend some time in Seaburn, near Sunderland, with the spring sun shining out across the strand and a balcony view in the middle of it all.
Deliberately choosing to do very little, it was a chance to walk slowly for once, taking in the beach and piers from Roker all the way to Whitburn. Reconnecting and renewing with every step.
The tide ebbs and flows and erodes as all things, but I remain grateful. The seafront of my childhood, sometimes neglected, renews in response, and despite the alienation of the modern age I can still return home. To hear the lilting, happy voices of my native (yet supplanted) accent. To share the promenade with dog walkers and joggers going along their way. To feel at peace among my people.
Not much has changed across the decades, even if I have.
