I can see the argument that investment in Syerston could be good for the local town and regional jobs.
But I do wonder: how much of the wealth created by mining an Australian resource will actually stay in Australia?
If the US is funding the mine to secure scandium for its own defence and aerospace industries, and the profits ultimately flow to investors offshore, what exactly are Australians gaining beyond jobs and royalties?
Wouldn’t it be smarter for Australia to mine and process and export the finished resource ourselves — capturing far more of the value chain, rather than simply digging it up and letting someone else profit from it?
We’ve been doing this for decades. Perhaps it’s time we stopped being the quarry and started owning the factory.
