  1. Up Close with a Stunning Zebra – South Africa

Zebras belong to the Equidae family, making them close relatives of horses and donkeys. Despite these familial ties, zebras stand out with their distinctive black and white stripes. These stripes are not just for show; they serve a variety of purposes, from camouflage to social communication.

Zebras are divided into three unique species, each with its own characteristics and habitats:

Plains Zebra: The most common of the three, Plains zebras, are found across eastern and southern Africa. Known for their bold black stripes on a white background, these zebras are often seen in grasslands and savannas.

Mountain Zebra: As the name suggests, Mountain zebras are adapted to rocky, mountainous terrains. They are distinguished by their narrower stripes and more robust bodies, making them perfectly suited for their harsh environments.

Grévy’s Zebra: Grévy’s zebras are the largest and most endangered of the three species. Native to Kenya and Ethiopia, they boast narrower stripes and are known for their long, rounded ears. Their striking appearance makes them particularly captivating.

The zebra featured in this video is the Plains Zebra, which was gracefully observed within the stunning landscapes of Sabi Sands Game Reserve in South Africa.

  2. Umkumbe Safari Game Drive Highlights

    https://youtu.be/Ugw5IA1rXvQ

Our first South African safari at Umkumbe Safari River Lodge was an unforgettable adventure. The lodge is nestled near Kruger National Park in Sabi Sands Game Reserve, where the wild roams free due to the unfenced boundaries. Over three thrilling days, we witnessed all of the Big 5—lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo—and I captured three of them on video. The rest of the Big 5 were immortalized in images at our next camp.

Getting to Umkumbe was a breeze, thanks to a quick flight from Joburg to Skukuza Airport and a seamless transfer to the lodge. During our transfer, we spotted a wide variety of animals, from elephants to lions, thanks to our driver’s sharp eyes and willingness to stop so we could take photos and videos. Our timely morning arrival allowed us to enjoy a delicious lunch before embarking on our first afternoon game drive.

The lodge’s riverside location provided a front-row seat to a procession of wildlife quenching their thirst and grazing on the riverbanks. From our room’s patio, we were mesmerized by the parade of elephants, giraffes, impalas, monkeys, and hyenas, setting the tone for an extraordinary trip.

After our exceptional stay at Umkumbe, we moved on to our next camp (nThambo Tree Camp), which I’ll detail in upcoming posts. Then, we ventured towards the water for the highly anticipated annual Sardine run. Trust me, I’ll get back to my underwater images soon!

  3. Juvenile African Bush Elephants at Play

    https://youtu.be/yAqpIiYPAkk

In the heart of the wilderness, a juvenile elephant exuded an abundance of vitality, engaging in spirited play with a younger companion. In this enchanted moment, nature seemed to catch the contagion of their youthful enthusiasm, moving in rhythm with their exuberance.

Moved by the spontaneity of this scene, I found myself transported to the pulsating beats of Michael Jackson’s “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’.” Its infectious rhythm seemed to mirror the vibrant dance of the elephants, creating an unexpected yet seamless connection between the world of music and the heart of the wild.

Eager to immortalize this harmonious convergence, I turned to Final Cut Pro, applying subtle color corrections to the video to accentuate the natural beauty of the elephants’ realm. The hues of the savanna emerged in their full glory, echoing the vibrant spirits of these magnificent creatures. Then, I transitioned to Logic Pro X, a realm of musical possibilities unfurled before me. Guided by inspiration, I set out to recreate the iconic baseline from Michael’s composition, which only took me 2 hours to figure out… Pitiful!

If the video does not include any music, it is quite likely that YouTube has imposed copyright restrictions, which could result in its potential unavailability.
