Today is also a splendid day to reconsider music streaming services
I recommend #Qobuz which happens to be very well supported by #RoonLabs #Roon which is unparalleled for #classical music

Fun little Sunday project. I have a Roon Labs server for a music server. I wanted a way my wife could play music without an app so I spent the morning getting this up on Docker on my NAS and now have a web remote that can play on Alexa #selfhosted #docker #roonlabs #audiophile #systemadministrator

Fun little Sunday project. I have a Roon Labs server for a on-prem cloud self hosted music server but I wanted a way my wife could play music she likes without an app so I spent the morning getting some stuff up on Docker on my Synology NAS and now have a web remote that can play on our touch screen home assistant. I was honestly just thinking about it being a webpage she could use but this ended up being way more useful. #selfhosted #docker #roonlabs #audiophile #systemadministrator

Anyone who's been in range of my blatherings in the last few years will know that I strongly recommend #Roon as the software of choice to manage, explore, and play your accumulated personal music library (seamlessly integrated with the additional tracks available from the better streaming services) at high audio quality in one to many rooms at home.
Here's a puff piece about an additional use case.

Edit:
Roon contacted me finally. Server is up and running. 😀Thanks to the team at #roonlabs.
Tested #roon over the holidays and it quite won my heart.
Would have subscribed for a lifetime license if they hadn't raised its price d u r i n g my ongoing free trial from $699 to $829 without any note…Really annoying behavior, I still hope they give me a chance…

@jbm Another reply no longer for Neil, but for others who may find this thread:
The #RoonLabs metadata support is such that artists or engineers in credits, or people or works referred to in text writeups, can hyperlink to those things elsewhere in your library. It's a phenomenal way to explore your music.
If you subscribe to Tidal and/or Qobuz, those streaming libraries are hooked in and feel like your library is just bigger now.
Also: #RoonReady networked audio equipment just works.

@neil Gotcha!
Nope, it's an excellent example of commercial-quality commercial software — one I don't mind paying for, in part because the extreme goodness of the user experience wouldn't be possible without the full-time maintenance #roonlabs do of their backend servers and the extensive metadata they supply.
I enjoyed using SlimServer (initially commercial, then community-maintained) for years, but Roon is way more pleasing and and non-nerd family member friendly.

@neil Now, #RoonLabs caveats relative to your initial wishlist:
There is some communication with Roon's central servers for the purpose of maintaining functionality and doing the necessary queries to pull your music's metadata.
There are dedicated Roon desktop programs for macOS and Windows, but no production-quality web interface.
The Linux server expects to be running on something Intel/AMD amd64ish.
There do exist free builds for Pi streaming audio endpoints!

@elforesto when you’re a privacy advocate and an audiophile the conflicts abound. :/
I use a #protectly firewall on my SoHo to mitigate issues. And Im about done with my music streaming server from Innuos. And I would never use #roonlabs at this point. -

#roonlabs exploration interface is just so ... exceptionally great.
I can jump from my ripped CD collection to the composition, listing all recordings of it available on either Tidal or Qobuz, complete with reviews and stream quality.
It's just CENTURIES ahead of navigating versions in either of the streaming services (#Tidal, #Qobuz, #Idagio, #Spotify) manually.
Especially for classical music. Because it knows how compositions work. Even when they span multiple tracks.

So, #roonlabs #roon is awesome for search/filtering music across different services.
The ability to see available versions across services and local files is jaw-dropping. Sadly they don't have a web or Linux UI.
Which means I will not be using it, because it makes no sense at all to work on my workstation, which hosts
Roon core, but having to use my phone to adjust the volume (!?) or switch to my tablet to find an album. It's almost perfect otherwise. Very impressed. @classicalmusic
