  1. The #Wyden Siren Goes Off Again: We’ll Be “Stunned” By What the #NSA Is Doing Under #Section702
#Senator #RonWyden says that when a secret interpretation of Section 702 is eventually declassified, the American public “will be stunned” to learn what the NSA has been doing. If you’ve followed Wyden’s career, you know this is not a man prone to hyperbole — and you know his track record on these warnings is perfect, this “directly affects the #privacy rights of #Americans.”

  2. #Senator, who has repeatedly warned about secret #US #government #surveillance, sounds new alarm over '#CIA activities'
The two-line letter written by Sen. #RonWyden, longest serving member of Intelligence Committee, does not disclose nature of CIA’s activities or senator’s specific concerns. But the letter follows a pattern in recent years in which Wyden has publicly hinted at wrongdoing or illegality within the federal government, sometimes referred to as “Wyden siren.”

  3. Senator, who has repeatedly warned about secret US #GovernmentSurveillance, sounds new alarm over ‘#CIA activities’

by Zack Whittaker, February 6, 2026

Excerpt: "In 2011, #RonWyden said that the U.S. government was relying on a secret interpretation of the #PatriotAct, which he said — without disclosing the nature of his concerns — created a 'gap between what the public thinks the law says and what the American government secretly thinks the law says.'

"Two years later, then-#NSA contractor #EdwardSnowden revealed that the National Security Agency was relying on its secret interpretation of the Patriot Act to force U.S. phone companies, including Verizon, to turn over the call records of hundreds of millions of Americans on an ongoing basis.

"Since then, Wyden has sounded the alarm on how the U.S. government collects the contents of people’s communications; revealed that the Justice Department barred Apple and Google from disclosing that federal authorities had been secretly demanding the contents of their customers’ push notifications; and said that an unclassified report that #CISA has refused to release contains 'shocking details' about national security threats facing U.S. phone companies.

"As noted by Techdirt’s Mike Masnick, we may not know yet why Wyden sounded the siren about the CIA’s activities, but every time Wyden has warned, he has also been vindicated."

  8. I just emailed my senators with the following message:

“I’m writing today to urge you NOT to vote to end the federal government shutdown without an agreement to extend the #ACA subsidies for at least a year. Despite how the shutdown affects me personally, I think it’s VITAL that Democrats stay strong and united against the cruelty and corruption of the Trump regime. Thank you!”

Sen. #RonWyden, the top Democrat on the #Senate #Finance Committee, said the GOP proposal would have been as much as a $250 billion cut to the #healthcare program, “massive #Medicaid cuts that hurt #kids, #seniors, Americans with #disabilities & working families.”

The idea of #termlimits for #scotus has merit and has been proposed by a variety of legal experts.

However no one has ever explained to me what will, or should, happen if the #Senate fails or refuses to confirm a #scotus nominee during the two-year window between terms.

Personally, I would prefer #Senator #RonWyden’s Judiciary reorganization proposal.

  14. “We are proposing a way to restore some balance between the 3 branches of government,” Sen #RonWyden added.

The bill’s most significant measure would increase the number of justices from 9 to 15 over the course of 12 years. The staggered format over 2 or 3 administrations is aimed at diminishing the chance that one #political party would pack the courts with its nominees.

  15. #RonWyden …said the goal of the bill is to restore public confidence in a battered institution. He said he hopes to get parts of the bill passed, even if the whole package is not embraced by lawmakers.

“It’s not an atomic secret that the process for selecting justices is politicized,” #Wyden said. “You’ve got this thoroughly politicized process resulting in a #SupremeCourt that now frequently issues sweeping rulings to overturn laws & upend precedents.”
