I have a #RocketKiln that fires using scrap wood but I've never heard of a traditional wood fire kiln using scrap wood to fire. Typically, people either chop their own over the course of a year or buy cords of wood which can be very expensive. I’m having another open studio event this Saturday. Just wanted to share what my studio looks like. It’s the garage behind our house, converted into a #pottery workshop. That’s a wood fired #RocketKiln in front and I have electric kilns inside. I could run my biz solely online (and I was grateful to during early pandemic era, 2020-2021) but that feels strange since my pottery pulls so much from my surroundings. It only makes sense to share it with other people who live here. #Florida

#RocketKiln test fire. No pots in the kiln, just a quick inaugural burn. It’s always fun to watch the flame travel downward and then horizontally into the J-tube.

Firing at night helps me see gaps between any of the bricks since they may have shifted over time. I rebuild certain sections, add a 2nd layer of brick or sometimes patch with clay.

While I do this, I can’t help but think of my teacher, Lisa Orr, who came up with this brilliant idea. I mention her in my blog post, up thread ⬆️

Every potter is a bit of a pyromaniac. As soon as the temperature drops below 60°F, it’s fire season. I have an entire body of work that I only make in the winter because I fire #pottery in my outdoor woodfire kiln. #Permaculture geeks will love this: I built a #RocketKiln with post consumer materials based on the design of the rocket stove. Between #gardening and #pottery, I’ve found so much use for free wood scraps. There’s just so much scrap wood out there from felling trees, woodworking and shipping pallets. Just make sure the wood is untreated. I got these scraps from a local woodworker that I’ll use in my outdoor #rocketkiln and for backyard fires. Also got a bag of sawdust which I’ll use to saggar fire pottery and to add carbon to my #compost. 🧵
