  1. Tomorrow, NSW will come together to honour the remarkable life of Dame Marie Bashir. A State Funeral will be held at St James’ Church in Sydney on Wednesday 4 February.

At around 12.30pm, the NSW Rural Fire Service Large Air Tanker Marie Bashir, named in her honour, will fly over Phillip Street as the hearse departs St James’ Church, subject to operational availability. The flyover marks her lifetime of service to the people of NSW.

Dame Marie Bashir served as Governor of NSW from 2001-2014, becoming the first woman to hold the role. A professor, psychiatrist and lifelong advocate for mental health, young people and Aboriginal communities, she made a lasting difference across the state.

Those wishing to pay their respects are welcome to gather in Martin Place, where the funeral will be live streamed from 10.00am (service begins 10.30am).

Those who wish to learn more or leave a message of condolence can visit www.nsw.gov.au/mariebashir

  2. RFS call-out earlier. No fire, but the more common for our brigade of “assist ambos”. Just a km from my place. It wasn’t much, but made a real difference to the people we helped, particularly the fella in palliative care needing a lift from his couch to his bed that the ambos couldn’t do on their own. Sometimes you make a difference to someone by easing them along and showing a touch of compassion.

    Updated

Firefighters from the #RFS and FRNSW, supported by aircraft have contained a bush fire which was burning under high voltage powerlines in the vicinity of Ku-Ring-Gai Chase Rd, Mount Colah.

Thanks to the swift action of firefighters, the fire only burnt through a small stretch of bushland before being contained. Our crews will remain on scene throughout the afternoon, strengthening containment lines and blacking out any hotspots.
