  20. Today, AFAC News released the Bushfire Seasonal Outlook for Summer. Northern and Central parts of NSW are carrying high grass fuel loads and are entering summer drier than normal, with no clear indication of increased rainfall to ease conditions.

These areas are likely to face an increased risk of fast-moving, intense grass and forest fires. In central and southern NSW, ongoing dry conditions on the western slopes of the ranges have led to significant underlying dryness in some forested areas. If rain continues to miss these areas, the risk of difficult-to-control fires will increase through summer.

If you live, work, or travel through bush fire-prone areas, ensure you are prepared. Review and discuss your bush fire survival plan so you know what to do if threatened by fires.

  40. Heatwaves, dangerous thunderstorms, Dangerous winds, Extreme Fire Danger for NSW, SA & Vic over next 36 hours

The majority of severe weather will result from the passage of a powerful front, however for South Australia and Victoria on Wednesday, a deepening offshore low has the potential to generate winds equal in strength to a category 2 tropical cyclone.

The low is likely to strengthen further on Wednesday as it passes through Bass Strait, with the central pressure dropping below 985hPa — the equivalent strength of a category 2 tropical cyclone

The unseasonable heat will combine with powerful winds, relatively low humidity, and rapidly drying soils to trigger the first extreme fire dangers of the season around Sydney, the Hunter, Illawarra and parts of the central west.

The risk is further exacerbated by dry lightning which could ignite multiple fires both on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday.

  42. The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting a heatwave across parts of NSW over the coming days, with temperatures expected to reach the high 30s and nudging almost 40 in some areas.

These conditions will lead to increased fire danger, and on Wednesday, dry north-westerly winds combined with high temperatures may see Extreme fire danger in some areas.

Tonight is a great time to talk about your bush fire plan.
    Ask yourself:
    • When will you leave if a fire threatens?
    • Where will you go?
    • What will you take?

Having a plan and discussing it with your family now can make all the difference.
