  1. So, I decided today, after plugging away at some of the awkward missable achievements (achievements you can get locked out from doing due to progression and must start a new game to get another chance to get), i sped through the last few story missions.

This wasn't so bad because after recruiting Lini, the special Moogle who comes with Ultima charge, I was effectively able to OHKO most enemies at range with the Gunner class.

I feel every time I bring up #FinalFantasyTacticsAdvance I find myself doggedly defending it as a "good game".
The game is best played casually. Playing it as part of #RetroAchievements is quite draining, made more draining by the fact I still have a truck load of things to do... But... I think for my own sanity, I might park this one until I do clean-up next year.

I appreciate I brought this on myself.
I wanted to play a Strategy RPG, and I ignored the perfectly acceptable suggestion of Devil Survivor.

  2. Replayed through Zombies Ate My Neighbors (SNES) for the first time since I was a kid. Used to play that game with my brother all the time.

It was fun to go back and revisit it. It still feels really good to play, and I was having a blast.

81 of 95 RetroAchievements (Casual) unlocked. Missed a big achievement for finishing all levels in one sitting, cuz I missed a bonus level somewhere. OOF.

  3. Had kind of a weird health day. I'm fine but had to go to the hospital and deal with lots of tests, which meant lots of waiting around and killing time

Started a new save of #PokemonRed and went hunting for #RetroAchievements. I have played through this dozens of times and THOUGHT I knew it like the back of my hand, but thanks to RA I learned some obscure stuff like that you can Cut tall grass, and get five free Pokeballs from Professor Oak

  4. I figured out how to get #RetroAchievements working on my Miyoo, which I brought with me to the hospital. If anyone else is on RA, let's be buds!!

  5. Mi primer mastered en RetroAchievements. Mi segundo juego de Game Boy tras el tetris fue éste pero en su versión Mickey Mouse. ¡Menuda memoria muscular tengo todavía!

  6. So, I finally got around to doing a new blog post on Ishambard's Nest.
Yes, I do remember it exists and I want to be better at uploading to that, mostly because it is a better venue for in-depth thoughts on games and stuff.

I figured, however, to back up a little bit, and I wanted to talk a little bit about #RetroAchievements I wanted to provide some context to what it all is and why I engage with it as much as I do.

It wouldn't be a Nest post without it being a bit of rambling scree, but honestly, at this point I am still trying to articulate this to all to myself as much as I am to you.

  7. So I told RetroAchievements to surprise me today, and I'd play the game it picked. I got the game X-Kaliber 2097 for the SNES.

This game is equal parts ridiculously hard, and ridiculously bad. After trying to play the game like normal, I was like F THIS, and threw on cheats.

Let me tell you something! These game is still just as stupid with cheats on. I almost rage quit the game multiple times.

Anyway I mastered it on RA after slogging through it, but I'm not proud, I'm not happy, and I hope I never play that trash again.

  8. I love RetroAchievements, but most emulators that work with it allow AI slop code or are partially closed-source. You'd think retro games would be safe, but ofc LLMs have to ruin that as well.

  9. I ripped and teared, until it was done. Wait. Wrong game.

I don't dislike Quake, as I made my way through chapters 3 and 4, I could fill some semblance of skill building, it probably helped that layer levels feel a little less claustrophobic, making fiends a little easier to work with.

#Quake feels like that friend of a great friend (Doom, in this case), and whilst you get on with this friend there are time when their humour doesn't land or they have a take that you find a little too questionable. It doesn't mean they are a bad person, you just can't see yourself hanging out with them unless it is in a group that includes your good friend.

Am I going to seek out more Quake after that? Besides Quake 2 that is. It's unlikely. Am I going to go back and play through it again? Not sure, I don't think it will be anytime soon if I were to.

  10. So, I was going to say how much easier Episode 3 of Quake was, sure the game throws more Vores at you, but there are ways and means to deal with most of them pretty effortlessly.

I was riding high for a little while, thinking I had this in the bag... And then hit episode 4...

Episode 4 on #N64 #Quake is savage. For starters you skip E4M1 and are thrown into E4M2. So all you have is a shotgun, in a stage that throws a Shambler and multiple Vores. Sure, there are a handful of power-ups, like a Pentagram of Protection, Quad Damage, Ring of Invisibility. But you need to get to them first, and unleash enough hell to get by.

That was rough. But... It wasn't The Pain Maze, E4M6. I gave big ups to the Shambler... But the Spawns, Episode 4's new enemy. My god. Worst enemy I have encountered in an FPS for a while. And the Pain Maze has 49 of the blighters!

I was quite locked in on this one, and burnt a little midnight oil for this one.

  11. So, I have figured a rather foolhardy long term goal.

I am going to work my way through a bunch of different consoles from my youth, and aim for 50 #RetroAchievements masteries for each console.

    Currently looking at:
    N64
    SNES
    NES
    Gameboy
    Gameboy Color
    Gameboy Advance
    Sega Genesis
    PlayStation 1

I crunched the numbers and across those systems i have already done 201. So that would be another 199 games in total.

    I am already halfway there!

That should keep me busy for a while and I am sure I will find even more weird things to experience!

  12. It's going to sound weird, but i can't wait to be solidly knocked out of the top 300 on #RetroAchievements

So, firstly, why top 300? Well, the top 300 are celebrated in the monthly E-Magazines. So it is quite a coveted space to be, but it is also where, I feel, it gets "competitive" and I just don't have it in me to compete.

It's been nice standing on the parapet, looking out, but my choices if I were to remain in this position are not appealing.

I could play harder, faster, stronger eating into time I just don't have, or I could mop up some quick and easy wins, blitzing high value quick games. Or I could go for the beats, over the mastery.

But whilst I am still here, I feel this weird pressure to be in the rat race. Perhaps because I thought getting here was a pipe dream. Evidently, I am just trying to cling to some kind of "glory".

I stand by what I often say.
I am not a good gamer, I am just stubborn and you'd be amazed at how far that can get you sometimes.

  13. I do love finding new sets and games I want to play... But...

  14. This past weekend I spent my time playing through a bunch of retro games on my Retroid Pocket 5. Next up I think I'm going to do Valis IV, or Slayers (SNES).

    Valis
    Valis II
    Valis III
Syd of Valis (Mastered on RA)
    Fantasy Zone
    Pocky & Rocky
    Ghost Chaser Densei
Ghost Sweeper Mikami: Joreishi wa Nice Body (Mastered on RA)

  15. Just finished the Genesis game Valis. It was a solid game that was held back a bit by poor jumping mechanics.

Gonna check out the rest of the series

38 of 51 RetroAchievements (casual) unlocked.

  16. Played through Magic Knight Rayearth for SNES. Entertaining and short JRPG that compiles the first season of the anime.

Also my first RetroAchievements (casual) completed game. 17 of 17 unlocked.

  17. Phantasy Star IV is now finished. It truly is the best of the original series. The leaps and bounds the game makes in improvements to everything, including story and dialogue is just perfect. An all timer!

65 of 93 RetroAchievements (Casual) unlocked.

  18. Began and finished Phantasy Star III yesterday. Ended up going the following route: Married Maia, Married Thea, and finished the game as Sean.

Glad that game is done, and no plans to take any other routes to see different generations lol.

    Unlocked 33 of 55 RetroAchievements.

  19. Phantasy Star II is now beaten with 59 of 69 RetroAchievements unlocked.

Now to decide if I go to the worst game of the series, or take break from the series and play something else.

  20. Okay, so i am absolutely hype for this set!

Theresia: Dear Emille was one of those games I picked up on a whim, based off the name. I say picked up like I saw it in a store, no, the DS-era was peak 17th Century naval shenanigans for me with my trusty R4 card.

I'm definitely going to need to revisit this Dark and gritty game as it is a fascinating and strange one for the DS. Combining a point and click horror game with some first person exploration, similar to how Etrian Odyssey played.

    I never finished this game...
So, expect me to talk about this one in some more detail in near future, I have a couple of things I want to tidy up before I dive into this one.

  21. Holy crud!
When did I break into the top 300 on #RetroAchievements ?!

This was a milestone i had honestly given up on, because I wasn't playing through games at a pace where i felt i was going to keep up even in the op 500 it was getting quite "competitive".

Still, I won't lie, filled with a ridiculous amount of pride right now, as i don't see myself being amazingly good at much, let alone being in the top 0.2% of a community of 140,000 people.

I think the words "rest weary traveller" come to mind at the moment...
Here is to my continuing endeavours to play and enjoy games I guess!

  22. Honestly...
This is probably my favourite #RetroAchievements badge I have ever acquired.

Yes, this dumb cowboy picture just feels so out of place with my other badges and I love it so much.

  23. And it's done.
I wasn't anticipating to do this so soon, as I was looking to play this on work commutes, and during lunch breaks.

Unfortunately, I have gotten in the habit of just going into all-out focus mode when I pick up a game, mostly out of fear that if I put it down, I won't pick it up again.

This hopefully won't happen with Grand Theft Auto 3...

Anyway, #MarioKart Super Circuit is has now been knocked off my list of childhood games.
Getting 3-Stars across the standard cups was not as bad as getting A-Rank or higher across the 150cc Retro tracks.

Time Trials for the retro tracks were also pretty savage, mostly because you have 5 laps to complete, and only a Triple mushroom to support you. Most tracks requiring a time of 1 minute 20, in 5 laps, it really put some driving skills to the test, and Super Circuit is quite nuanced in its driving.
