The current strategy to save endangered species in North America is to build back populations to a level that avoids extinction, then support stops.
π» Three North American species: gray wolves, grizzly bears and bison are examples of how local restrictions after they reached minimal levels prevented the species to thrive.
πͺΆ Restrictions also limit ability of indigenous people to maintain a cultural connection.
π A better conservation strategy would be to measure success by creating a thriving population participating in its natural habitat. But this would require a new vision and policies.

π³ Brazilian study used small amounts of Amazonian dark earth (ADE) in forest restoration and found it supercharged tree growth.
π In land that had been worn down by deforestation, pasture use, and poor soil management, the ADE was found to enable faster beneficial fungal growth which enriched the tree rhizosphere.
π Fungi turned out to be more important for establishment than other soil components.
π Good News for Restoration Science: Small-volume inoculum can be developed to help native trees establish faster without relying on fertilizers or herbicides.
