  1. A lovely thing to find in my pigeonhole in the mail room: a copy of my colleague Simon Brodbeck's new book with Cardiff University Press.

He's not on this site so will get no lift from this, but he's a Sanskrit scholar looking at early Hindu theology and the Mahabarata.

As you can see, he's got a lovely cover AND the book is available #OpenAccess if you don't want to buy the paperback.

  4. Blog post from my colleague at the Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK, Abdul-Azim Ahmed, examining the religion results from the 2021 census for England and Wales as they relate to Muslims in Britain and, specifically, Muslims in Wales. He considers the tension between growth and the enduring minority status - what it means for individuals, communities, and institutions.

  6. Hey all,

I have a friend wanting to join mastodon who is a religious scholar but it looks like the scholar instance is closed at the moment. Any suggestions on a good server for him to jump onto?

  11. “We are afraid of religion because it interprets rather than just observes. Religion does not confirm that there are hungry people in the world; it interprets the hungry to be our brethren whom we have allowed to starve.”

  16. So moving my account to rcsocial lasted all of a half-hour.

Despite the apparent willingness to host all sorts of faiths & all separate viewpoints, I got met at the gate by someone with a very my-way-or-the-highway attitude. I dislike it when people try to limit a Limitless Deity. I could tell it was going to be endless animosity, so I left.

Does any #Religidon or other #theology nerd have a recommendation for where I can set up my account in peace, without annoying my neighbors too badly?

  20. “If you want to know how science and religion are related, first come to know the deepest truth of yourself. This is what I realized when I looked into the nighttime sky: I saw myself in the stars and the stars within me.”

Thanks to @naomilawsonjacobs for their careful stewardship of the list and the welcoming committee while I was recovering last week.

  35. Its that time of year (and I'm about to teach it in my course): #Seculariam is, almost universally in the Western world, a version of lapsed Christianity.

The separating out of the religious in the way the west has done it could only be done on the basis of a Christian theology.

Being Christian is totally cool! No one is attacking it or your right to observe as you see fit. But please, PLEASE reconsider your words this #Christmas when you call Santa and a tree secular.

  39. I mean we've done Hindutva, the Khalistan movement, State Shinto, modern Chinese Confucian Imperialism, and Sinhalese Buddhist nationism - [then Jewish nationalism/Zionism] - next week week we do Christian nationalism (so...colonialism), followed by the modern (Wahhabi and Pakistan) and Caliphate movements.

Not a blink. Not a murmer.

Of.course I'm 150% jinxing it by writing about it here, but Im so high on managing to convey info without being crucified by two sides I don't care.

  42. Wait, I'm hearing rumours that #SBL has issued a dress code? For real? You're running an in-person conference with no mask mandate in 2022, and this is your priority.

I don't think I can take too much credit for chairing panels in my "We've heard enough from old, white men" t-shirt, but I would like to think that I have played my small part, and I'm almost sorry I'm not going to be there to demonstrate the full extent of my respect for this new dress code.

  45. @pmphillips I am the founder of a U.S. Druidry practice which, until the pandemic celebrated exclusively in-person, in the landscape, outdoors. We have been in continuous practice since 2008. In March 2020 we moved everything online and continue to exist there. Still evolving, practicing, and teaching. #religidon #Druidry #technology #pandemic
