Final pencils for issue 3 of Corbie were completed on Tuesday afternoon. Scanning and cleanup of the art begins today.
Those last few pages seemed to take forever to redraw and wore me down a bit. Feeling refreshed now and ready to move on to this next stage. #ReadCMC #MastoArt #Comics #ComicBooks

The deed is done.
The last page of rough pencils for Corbie issue 3 was finished late last night. Overall I'm pretty happy with the way it's shaping up. There are a few things I'd like to go back and change, but there's still plenty of scope for making tweaks before this project is done.
Work on the clean pencil art starts today!

I've been working on the rough art for Corbie issue 3 for a few weeks now, and the finish line is almost in sight. Another couple of pages remaining, then it's on to the next step in the production process.
Some of my favourite panels to draw are the ones with Corbie in action or flying around, as well as anything where characters break through the boundaries of the comic panels. Happily, these last few pages check all these boxes.

Here's another little peek at the art for next issue of Corbie. I wanted to have a super productive weekend and get a bunch of pages finished. It didn't happen. Thankfully the few pages that did get done look pretty good IMHO, so there's that...

I was feeling blue last night and struggling to push through with pencilling the next page of the comic, so I decided to switch things up and create some new chalkboard art instead.

Highlights from today's Corbie pencilling sessions. Rough art is always subject to change, especially when I drop the ball like I did with the second image. Corinne had removed her helmet during this scene and I accidentally drew her with it on, so now I need to partially redraw it.
Welcome to the wonderful world of sequential art, where you get to manage not just props and wardrobe, but continuity too 😅

Found this pen doodle of Corinne from... I'm gonna say about 2012... while rummaging around in my desk drawer.
Not super different to how she looks today. The most notable change is that she used to have braided strands of hair above her temples that met up around the back of her head. That element didn't last long as her design was cleaned up / simplified for comics.

Corinne sports six different outfits throughout Corbie issue 2. This school uniform is one of them, and is unique in that there's little or no parts reuse. Subsequent Corinne model sheets were assembled using her main design as a framework to save time! #mastoart #comics #webcomics #readcmc

A very rough first preview of Corbie issue 3's pencils. This will go through a good few more iterations before it's done.
I'm recording myself drawing this issue, which is taking some getting used to. It's funny how seeing my work via monitor as I draw almost feels like a second set of eyes, and highlights issues I otherwise wouldn't have seen.

Sometimes it's not until you've had some distance between drawing a comic and re-reading it that you spot issues. In the case of Corbie issue 1 it took so long to draw that it was almost a completely different animal by the time I got to the last page.
Top panel is original page 3 art, beneath it is the redo. Read on and I'll point out everything that bugged me and what I did to fix it. #comics #mastoart #art #readcmc #webcomics (1/6)

Comparison of the scrappy pen sketch that was the first ever illustration of Corbie with how the character looks today.
It doesn't feel fair to compare a scrappy pen doodle to the finished product, but I do find it interesting to look back and see how certain elements of the armour were retained or modified while other aspects were dropped, like the face mask.

Corinne sported several different outfits in CMC issue 2, so multiple model sheets were required. For expediency they all used the same base art and were modified as required. This is the workshop look briefly seen when she's working on building the Corbie armor. Might be my favourite ensemble, and hopefully I'll get to draw it again in the near future... #mastoart #readcmc #comics

A panel from issue 2 of Corbie. One of my goals for this go-around was to produce much cleaner, simplified art. By the last few pages though, I kinda fell back into aspirations of being Gene Colan, utilising heavy blacks and hatchwork. Really wanted to commemorate #WorldIntrovertDay but I only realised it was happening a few days ago, so I had to create this from scratch *very* fast! I'd thought about doing this playful subversion / homage to the famous Mockingbird cover since it was published, but hadn't gone public with Corbie at the time so I had to sit on the idea until now. #mastoart #readcmc

This was really just me trying to get a feel for how the characters would look, prior to the creation of proper model sheets in the spring. Even now, I still end up going back and making further tweaks here and there to the existing designs as I find better ways of doing things. #readcmc #comics #mastoart

Close-up of Corinne on the cover of Corbie issue 2. The gap between doing the digital painting for issue 1's cover and this one was so long that I had to re-trace my steps and figure out my process all over again, and it was initially frustrating. Lots of planning involved in this piece at the pencil stage, and then in the painting it was trial and error, re-doing everything over and over for days until I was happy with it. #readcmc #mastoart #comics

From CMC issue 2. Before the black-and-grey armor, Corinne briefly wore this white prototype - but the road to becoming a superhero wasn't without some teething problems...
This is a small portion from a double page spread depicting Corinne building the Corbie armor. The hardest part of drawing this was getting the flame to look the way I wanted it to. My initial pencils were way off and I had to re-do it several times before it fit with the style of the artwork. #mastoart #readcmc #superheroes
