You only need one or two wild roses open to get bathed in heavenly perfume. This marsh rose (Rosa pisocarpa) beckoned from afar

Flowers now, berries later: a thimbleberry flower (Rubus parviflorus) amid its huge leaves, and a salal (Gaultheria shallon) stem of barely open, very hairy flowers.

Red huckleberry (Vaccinium parviflorum). I almost missed the flowers this year! They're so green! Two weeks ago i thought I had plenty of time. Now they've mostly set fruit.

Trouvailles

Silk tassel bush (Garrya elliptica) blooming in the park. Although it doesn't grow natively quite this far north, it thrives in our climate.

This mining bee (Andrena spp) was busily investigating every corner of this dewberry (Rubus ursinus) flower, as if there weren't hundreds of freshly opened ones nearby.

I've been getting up at 5AM to get used to beating the heat, anticipating this summer, to walk my shih tzu. He doesn't handle hot weather very well. I am feeling a little bleary eyed! But I do get to walk in cool fresh air amid some fantastic shades of green, because Seattle has been blessed with a cool winter and spring. This is a scene processed to match my impressions. I gather Seattle's nickname is the Emerald City, but I haven't found any yellow brick roads so the trails will have to do. Ravenna Park, Seattle, Washington, USA
