I can only feature 60 or so works in my #PublicDomainDayCountdown to 2025, but #HathiTrust will open more than 76,000 volumes to US readers in January, and over 60,000 volumes to readers outside the US. Find out more about what's in store here: https://www.hathitrust.org/press-post/2025-public-domain-titles/. (Their post also includes a link to my blog.)

#scotus skroowed the pooch on this case. They missed a golden opportunity to rule that the Berne Copyright Convention is incompatible with the US Constitition, and that, as directed by the #constitution , #copyright in the US is currently unconstitutional and should expire after 28 years.
#Copyright was intended to last for a limited time, not to provide a continuing income stream for creators, and certainly not for the #heirs and #estates.

"Caedit nos pestis" ("The plague is upon us") are the first words sung in the oratorio/opera _Oedipus Rex_. It premiered in Paris in 1927, with music written by Igor Stravinsky, and libretto translated into Latin by Abbé Jean Daniélou from French text written by Jean Cocteau. In 2021 it was the LA Opera's first performance after coming out of COVID lockdown: https://www.laopera.org/performances/2122-season-page/oedipus-rex/ The 1927 #oratorio joins the public domain in 9 days. #PublicDomainDayCountdown

It's definitely exciting that in 27 days, half of Andrew Waley's English translation of The Tale of Genji will be in the public domain. #TheTaleofGenji Waley's Genji is the first one that was essentially complete (it omits 1 chapter) in English. #PublicDomainDayCountdown The first two volumes are already on Project Gutenberg so I imagine the third volume will be joining them shortly after the new year.
