[Observations and #simulations] In addition to #observations of protostars using #interferometers with ever-higher resolution, researchers are developing multidimensional numerical simulations.
The aim is to better understand the formation and evolution of the #protostellar disk and the #protostar through the different phases and scales of the collapse of a dense low- and high-mass core.
This Thursday, Benoît Commerçon, researcher @cnrs at the Centre de Recherche Astrophysique de Lyon (CRAL), will present to IRAPians the results obtained using “his” numerical experiments, as well as future developments ... https://www.irap.omp.eu/event/disk-and-protostar-formation-new-insights-from-3d-numerical-simulations/

#Protostellar outflows are powerful jets of gas and dust that erupt from a young star, or protostar, during its earliest stages of formation.

Why are (almost) all the #protostellar outflows aligned in Serpens Main? https://stsci-opo.org/STScI-01J0PNXVZGGSKMR1SVVD48M1PE.pdf -> First-of-Its-Kind Detection Made in Striking New Webb Image: https://webbtelescope.org/contents/news-releases/2024/news-2024-115

Herbig-Haro 211, a bipolar jet travelling through interstellar #space at supersonic speeds.
At roughly 1000 light-years away from Earth, the object is one of the youngest and nearest #protostellar outflows.
Herbig-Haro objects are luminous regions surrounding newborn #stars, and are formed when stellar winds or jets of gas spewing from these newborn stars form shockwaves colliding with nearby gas and dust at high speeds.

This new image from the NASA/ESA/CSA James #Webb Space Telescope features Herbig-Haro 211 #HH211, a bipolar jet travelling through interstellar space at supersonic speeds: https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2023/nasa-s-webb-snaps-supersonic-outflow-of-young-star/ and https://www.esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Images/2023/09/Webb_snaps_supersonic_outflow_of_young_star and https://webbtelescope.org/contents/media/images/2023/141/01H9NWH9JEBFPKVD3M1RRTGGQJ - at roughly 1000 light-years away from Earth in the constellation Perseus, the object is one of the youngest and nearest #protostellar outflows, making it an ideal target for Webb.

Super exited to see that Dr Patrick Kavanagh at #MaynoothUniversity co-authored a new paper giving us an incredible view of a #protostellar #jet from HH 211 with #NIRCam! The image is absolutely stunning.
What's even more wild is that this appears to show the origin of the "Green Fuzzies" that we saw back in the day with Spitzer. A bit more puzzling is the fact that the flow is almost completely molecular, which is unexpected!
