@ellis Generally, the furry fandom is a pretty open space, right? Anyone can make their own fursona, and just be whatever you want: a wolf, a cat, a bird, a dolphin, whatever.
But there's also fictional species; the most notable ones are #protogen and #sergals, probably. Some furry just came up with those fictional species at some point and others thought that was cool so they also maybe made a fursona of that species. Through that community grows a "lore", and so on.
But some furry artists who invent fictional species declare their species "closed species", i. e. they retain and enforce their IP rights over that species. Nobody else is allowed to draw characters of that species, lest they purchase a license to it. They'll be super hostile and litigious to anyone who infringes on their rights, and they sell the 'license' to interact with that species in any way, usually for a lot of money. And even then you can only do approved things with your own original character, based on what the author of the species wants.
Protogen are actually just the "free", lite version of the actual closed species, Primagen. But nobody knows that, let alone buys that license, because everyone thinks it's ridiculous and anti-community to bring DRM and IP management to the furry fandom lol, especially over something nebulous like a species.
Like. nobody is against retaining rights on your own characters of course and knock-offs and art theft are frowned upon, but copyrighting entire species and making rules for what you can and can't do with them, in such a fan-driven such as the furry fandom, is very frowned upon. Especially because some 'closed species' are, like, as generic as 'bunny with horns'.
The only people who actually buy rights to those are, like, rich furry influencers and crypto bro types who actually think they're better than others for being a "premium species" lol.
