🎣 Can giving coastal communities new jobs prevent overfishing?

For #ThrowbackThursday this week, we look to a study that tracked how seaweed farming affected fishing villages in the Philippines. Researchers found that seaweed farming didn’t automatically replace fishing – it depended heavily on economics.

🌊🤝 Protecting seahorses and their seas takes teamwork! This week’s #ThrowbackThursday spotlight study brought fishers, scientists, and traders in Philippines together to save the vulnerable tiger tail seahorse from overfishing.

The winning solution? A minimum catch size limit of 10 cm, so seahorses have enough time to mature and breed, alongside no-take marine protected areas (MPAs).

Human use and land development put freshwater ecosystems under immense stress – so how can we protect these species and habitats?

For #ThrowbackThursday this week, we look to a study that offers a blueprint for Freshwater Protected Areas (FWPAs). Conservation strategies include protecting surrounding land to prevent runoff, restoring natural water flow patterns, and preventing the introduction of invasive species.

Since July, our PhD candidate and researcher, Samara, has interviewed more than 200 fishers, traders, divers, and other community members across eight of Sri Lanka’s coastal districts as part of a national-scale study of seahorse fisheries and trade.
Her fieldwork is revealing valuable insights into seahorse bycatch and trade, alongside the cultural beliefs and practices that shape how people interact with these fishes.

Governments have made promises to protect seahorses from illegal and unsustainable trade. At the upcoming 34th meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) Animals Committee, taking place July 13-17 in Geneva, Switzerland, Project Seahorse will be there to help make sure governments follow through.

Indonesia 🇮🇩 is home to 11 seahorse species, but 7 are often found in the traditional medicine trade, and we know so little about how this impacts these fishes and their habitats.

To change that, we teamed up with National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) in Indonesia to build capacity and share knowledge with nearly 200 ocean enthusiasts from government organizations, academia, research institutions and NGOs.
